Hey

Long time ago, I've bought a laptop - California Access M151 (id has Radeon x600).

At that time the following packages were available:

ati-drivers-8.27.10-r1 (they were masked at that time)
gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r13
xorg-x11 - from the same period as kernel (i don't know the version)

At this configuration OpenGL worked fine. Unfortunately with some update, it stopped working properly. I've managed to discover that this problem is called "half-screen" and here how it looks like.

As you see OpenGL "stuff" is moved to the left, so you can only see the right side. At that time I couldn't find the answer to this problem. But it was not very important, so I let it go.

Recently I've done a major upgrade.

ati-drivers-8.40.4
gentoo-sources-2.6.23-r1
xorg-x11-7.2

Everything was recompiled
emerge -uDv world
etc-update
revdep-rebuild

And ... it still doesn't work.

Thanks for any answers.

Just dealt with this on an X300 tonight. The solution is to use the latest drivers available which are not in portage.

So emerge -C ati-drivers, then download the latest driver from ati.com:

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run

Code:
wget https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run
chmod +x ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run
./ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run

Let it install. Make sure to `eselect opengl set ati`

Then reboot and it will fill the screen again.

Thanks for the tip. It actually worked. But this driver doesn't support kernel 2.6.23. I've found how to fix it:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196820#c40

Notice that in order to use it, You must have a portage overlay configured.
