Everyone with new hardware anxious for a new release should try this Gentoo based live cd: http://www.sysresccd.org/
It's pretty recent and very handy.

There is a very real reason for new releases, and shame on you people who said there's no point in new releases.

1) CRITICAL new drivers that prevent installation ( https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202213 )
2) Less compiling.
3) Security flaws in the existing stages.

Hello I very much like the idea of doing an install of Gentoo from my current hard drive distro (kubuntu) . I have previously done it the more traditional way of mini install disk and gentoo manual. Are there any good guides, links, tips you could give to get me up to speed on doing this ? I am assuming most of the gentoo manual info will be relevant after a few initial steps.

I will be installing from sdb master drive (kubuntu) over my sda (Fedora) drive.

Thanks in advance for any help

flebber,

You need the normal Install Guide with the extra steps for Knoppix here

I am using "sysrescuecd-0.4.1"
http://www.sysresccd.org/
It's based on Gentoo,
It gives you a choice 32 or 64 bits,
You can have X and Firefox,
It also contains "mc" great console filebrowser.
And it's much leaner than ubuntu.
Gerard.

Hello,

Is there any word as to when this release comes out? Is it after Christmas, before the New Year's Eve?

Thanks!

hey folks out there,

is there at least ONE reason for a new profile yet? I don't see any as it's more or less just some use-flags and maskings...

Or its gonna be a christmas present.
It's a pitty I m not got a knowledge to help with that progress. but I am working on myself :-)

Atti simon: I have 2006.1 on my desk ass wel but thats in another country,
But there are many problems with last series of ati ahci host controller and loading ahci module while it.
Whitch is adaed to most new laptops because of its many plusses. So its huge chance that your new Hp will have one ass well.

The only question for me is because of trying ubuntu (amd disapitment of how much mandrivalike it become) and I want to know if to go back to opensuse 10.2 till that or to stay waiting with ubuntu.
Sysrescue CD is good thing but for several reasons wasn't for this case but was useful for me for other thing (changed position of my GParted).

to:Rei
that reason is mostly a hardware problems, for example my ahci controler isue.

miso5: Hardware issues are mostly kernel stuff and that's got nothing to do with profiles

this is an issue of the LiveCD - not the profile itself.

Hi guiness.stout,
I started using sysrescue-cd some time ago.
http://www.sysresccd.org/Download
It is small enough to cache in ram,
it's gentoo based,
it can run 32 or 64 bit,
it has X and Firefox,
and mc and other goodies.
Gerard.

Very nice, thank you! I still want 2007.1 though, or we can just wait for 2008.0. :)

Who says there's defintitely going to be a 2007.1? While the gentoo developers do currently aim to have 2 releases per year, that's not a promise.

And why so much noise over a release anyway? All releases do is update the media. And there haven't been too many major changes since the last release anyhow.

Noise? I was just asking is all. I guess tone is hard to convey online. We need a <tone> </tone> tag on here, lol. I was just mearly wondering if that was going to happen before the end of the year is all since the release page says Nov/Dec 07 for 2007.1.

And this is exactly the reason for an update. Let me give you an example; I am writing this on a relatively new MacBook Pro - and the current installation CD had no drivers to provide networking support. So I had to boot from a Kubuntu Live CD and install Gentoo from there. Mind you, it works - but then we could just copy the iso image and host it on the Gentoo servers ... :/

So even if it is only an update, a new LiveCD would be nice.

Indeed it would be nice, since the 2007.0 discs doesn't even boot on my shiny new rig.

Just use a live disk from *anywhere* that works with your hardware and a recent stage from http://www.funtoo.org/linux/ [drobbins] -- see http://blog.funtoo.org/2007/12/i-building-gentoo-stages.html for more info.
