I'm having a hard time getting surround sound to work here. I'm using an ASRock Mainboard with a VIA AC97 7.1 Onboard Soundcard.
First I have to say, I don't know anything about surround sound.
I wanted to follow this Howto: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Surround_Sound but i quickly found that something wasn't right. It says to use aplay -D surround51 foo.wav to test the channels, but when I try i get Code: | $ aplay -D surround51 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav
ALSA lib dlmisc.c:118:(snd_dlsym_verify) unable to verify version for symbol _snd_pcm_route_open
ALSA lib pcm.c:2108:(snd_pcm_open_conf) symbol _snd_pcm_route_open is not defined inside (null)
aplay: main:545: audio open error: No such device or address |
when I don't use -D surround51 the file plays.
I don't know what i could have done wrong.
my ultimate goal would be to be able to watch movies in 5.1 with xine and play mp3s in pseudo 2.1 (all speakers) with mplayer. But i don't have the slightest idea how.... _________________ shift HAPPENS |

It was wrong, and is now corrected - look again
Code: | speaker-test -D surround51 -c 6 -t wav |

okay that works now....
there are just a few more things.. How can i tell every program that is not capable of 5.1 sound to use all channels and not just front right an left.
I just tested 5.1 sound in xine with a DVD.. it seems that everything except the LFE works there. _________________ shift HAPPENS |

that is not working. I took it from here http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~bondhugu/alsamch.shtml and configured mplayer the way mentioned there. What I get is: Code: | ...
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm.c:2144:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM dmix6
[AO_ALSA] Playback open error: No such file or directory
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound
... |
I remember having read that alsa-lib doesn't support .asourrc anymore... _________________ shift HAPPENS |
