|
|
Hi all.
Just wanna say that my "upgrade" from Mandrake 8.2 to Gentoo is now working. I only miss to configure some user accounts, but that shouldn't cause too much problem.
The story:
I have a Dell Dimension PIII 800 with 2 20GB disks. hda = XP, hdb was MDK 8.2
Started off by booting the Gentoo 1.2 CD and followed the installation instructions. First "problem" was that my mandrake installation was using more partitions than the "standard" gentoo install. Had to modify that, and given the warnings about ReiserFS (which all my mandrake partitions run) I decided to go with XFS except for my home partition, which I didn't want to erase.
Then I followed the instructions and after 5 hours or so - getting rather late - I was up to setting up GRUB. Mandrake uses LILO as default boot loader so I wasn't familiar with GRUB, and had some speculation about installing it late at night - but it went smoothly onto my HDA MBR.
The system booted without a hich.
After a good nights sleep I installed X and KDE (took about forever), and found out that my USB mouse wasn't working. I did a search on this forum, and some bright person suggested someone else to read the USB mouse HOWTO, which helped tremendiously
On to sound. Took me a LONG time to figure out that I shouldn't compile my sound card support as a module in kernel. Just enable sound support and use the ALSA drivers. Maybe that needs a little more attention in the desktop configuration guide?
We'll. Everything is working now. XMMS is up and running, and as said, I only need to configure user accounts.
What do I think abount Gentoo? It's the best experience I've ever had with any Linux. It's MUCH faster than my mandrake installation, and takes up far less disk space.
You guys rock!

Can you clarify this for me?
Did you only select sound support in kernel or did you also select emu10k1 support?
