hi everyone!!! need help here...
i recently installed gentoo on my friend's emt64 machine without any hassles (except for one emerge error regarding gpm which turned out to be a bug)
I followed more or less the same procedure for my amd64 machine (athlon 64 2800+) but ran into a series of problems (I compiled all packages using x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.2.2 gcc)
1) nvidia-drivers-100.14.19 failed with sandbox access violation which i solved by doing
Code:
FEATURES="-sandbox" emerge nvidia-drivers

2) alsa-lib would refuse to compile. It turned out that it needed python stuff, so i emerged python-2.5 and python-updater. Then alsa-lib installed fine
3) emerge mplayer failed. The build log had lotsa warnings and some errors...i figured it could be some USE flag, so i removed "ssse3" flag and re-emerged, and it was a success
4) Now i am stuck here at "emerge kdebase-startkde". The first package- mDNSResponder- fails with the following error:
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/depend-java-query", line 8, in <module>
    from java_config_2 import __version__
ImportError: No module named java_config_2
 * Unable to determine VM for building from dependencies:
NV_DEPEND: !net-dns/avahi
        java? ( >=virtual/jdk-1.4 )  java? ( >=dev-java/java-config-2.0.33-r1 >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.7 )
VNEED:

 *
 * ERROR: net-misc/mDNSResponder-107.6-r5 failed.
 * Call stack:
 *                       ebuild.sh, line 1712:  Called dyn_setup
 *                       ebuild.sh, line  763:  Called qa_call 'pkg_setup'
 *                       ebuild.sh, line   44:  Called pkg_setup

 * The specific snippet of code:
 *                              die "Failed to determine VM for building."
 *  The die message:
 *   Failed to determine VM for building.

I emerged emul-linux-x86-java and then
Code:
java-config --list-available-vms
which gives the following error:
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/java-config-2", line 8, in <module>
    from java_config_2 import __version__
ImportError: No module named java_config_2
So i thought that python needs updating or something...i run" /usr/sbin/python-updater" and the output is:
Code:

ist: =dev-java/java-config-2.1.2-r1
 * Adding to list: =sys-apps/file-4.20-r1
 * Adding to list: =sys-libs/cracklib-2.8.9-r1
 * Adding to list: =dev-libs/libxml2-2.6.30
 * Adding to list: =dev-python/pycrypto-2.0.1-r6
 * Adding to list: =dev-python/python-fchksum-1.7.1

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies -
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "=sys-apps/file-4.20-r1".

Now what do i do...i have no idea what i did wrong. Here's my "emerge --info"
Code:

emerging file didn't work...reported errors.
Anyway, now what i did was:
Code:

emerge -av expat
revdep-rebuild -X
python-updater

several files including 'file' emerged successfully....but the update stops at:
Code:

 ERROR: dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8g failed.
 * Call stack:

If i try to emerge openssl again with the new version which is available in the repo:

What do i do now? emerge kdebase-startkde has started running (which earlier wasn't compiling) but i have stopped it and feel that this python update thing must be taken care of. Or should i go ahead with kde emerge? What seems to be going wrong..i am getting a lot of errors building my system although i followed the gentoo-docs word for word

hello, just had the same problem the other way (used to amd64 and trying an EMT64).
I could fix it using

FEATURES="-sandbox" emerge -1 sandbox

then the sandbox was repaired, everything fine and the birds singing (big thanks to hkbst for his help on finding that out :D)

I hope it helps.

i also had the same problem with java-config.

i found a hint on the web, that this could be an python issue.

after emerging python, you will get the hint to run
Code:
/usr/sbin/python-updater

this script seems to check for python bindings and emerges the broken packages. in my case, that took quite a while...

cheers!

alex
