Emerging kdelibs-3.5.7-r2 fails about QT not found[SOLVED]

Post by guinness.stout » Thu Sep 13, 2007 1:22 am

Alright so the past few days I have been pouring over the forums looking anything with kdelibs-3.5.7-r2 or library qt-mt in it and have tired several solutions which are not working.

I have tried the following:

revdep-rebuild
revdep-rebuild -X
revdep-rebuild --library
emerge -C kdelibs
emerge kdelibs
emerge -C qt
emerge qt
emerge -C kdelibs
emerge kdelibs
emerge -C kde-meta
emerge kde-meta

Now for the output.

emerge --info

Forgot the config.log

Code: Select all

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.61. Invocation command line was

  $ ./configure --prefix=/usr --host=i486-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --with-distribution=Gentoo --disable-fast-malloc --with-libart --with-libidn --with-ssl --without-hspell --disable-libfam --enable-dnotify --with-acl --with-alsa --without-arts --enable-cups --without-gssapi --without-tiff --without-jasper --without-openexr --with-utempter --without-lua --enable-sendfile --enable-mitshm --without-aspell --enable-dnssd --with-rgbfile=/usr/share/X11/rgb.txt --with-x --enable-mitshm --without-xinerama --with-qt-dir=/usr/qt/3 --enable-mt --with-qt-libraries=/usr/qt/3/lib --disable-dependency-tracking --disable-debug --without-debug --disable-final --without-arts --prefix=/usr/kde/3.5 --mandir=/usr/kde/3.5/share/man --infodir=/usr/kde/3.5/share/info --datadir=/usr/kde/3.5/share --sysconfdir=/usr/kde/3.5/etc --build=i486-pc-linux-gnu

Welcome to libexpat hell.

What I did to get past this problem is:
  • downgrade to earlier expat version
  • move /usr/lib/libexpat* to /usr/local/lib
  • upgrade expat
  • emerge everything
  • remove /usr/local/lib/libexpat*
You can search the forums for "libexpat" or just "expat" to get other workarounds.

It is possible that you have a different problem but the error message you got above was the first sign I had of entering libexpat hell.

Actually what is interesting, this started when I attempted emerge --update --deep world and KDE was upgraded to 3.5. My first issue (I don't remember exactly) lead me to several expat posts, those instructions fixed my first issue, not so much this one. Your suggestion on the other hand is new to me. I will try that when I get home and do some more looking at expat. I did read the sticky about expat and everyone having issues so this is good times! weeeeeeeeee.

Feedback:

I was in the same situation like guinness.stout exactly. The workaround of BitJam is the solution for me. :D

I got the dev-libs/expat-2.0.1 with this emerge --update --deep world at the beginning and the trouble starts with much breaks in compiling.
For downgrading i used dev-libs/expat-1.95.8.
I love the Gentoo Forums.

Alright so after reading all the post in the expat sticky I've got things working.

Code: Select all

revdep-rebuild -X --library libexpat.so.0
Did the trick in the end. The first post in the expat sticky got me a bit further but didn't fix the issue. I ran those commands then attempted to emerge kdelibs again to no avail. Then I saw kdelibs-r3 came out after I ran the above command and emerged pango and fontconfig. Now I don't know if kdelibs compiled because r3 was released, I doubt it, but it could have been a factor.

So once kdelibs emerged properlly I tired to startx again. Dead still. I rm'ed the revdep files, re ran the above command and it found nothing. I then did emerge --update --pretend world and found 241 packages, mostly kde to emerge. I let this run (here we are 2 days later) and walah(sp?) it works. My original kdelibs problem I will assume was fixed by following the instructions and suggestions in the expat sticky.

I had the same thing happen to me and I was digging around the log file that a failed emerge spits out. After looking through like hundreds of posts here about libexpat being lame, "fontconfig" and "xml parser" were on my mind and I did notice them in that log file. I just did `emerge fontconfig` and kdelibs actually made it past the qt-mt part of the configure.

But of course, after this, I'll have to `revdep-rebuild -X --library libexpat.so.0`.

I think. .I hope =)
