I have noticed on the GnuCash website that they have a version called "stable" which is 2.2.1. This version is available in portage, but it is Hard Masked. This forum post explains a bit about what hard masking means and it states that packages are hard masked for the following reasons:

  • experimental ebuilds
  • packages that have a known unfixed bug
  • ebuilds that are dependant on unavailable software
  • ebuilds that will break or are incompatible with the current tree
  • ebuilds that have an unfixed security vulnerability
  • builds that are "in-progress" such as Gnome or KDE major version updates

and that they are unsupported and nobody will answer questions about them...
Anyhoo, I was wondering, is there a place we can go to find out when something like the GnuCash "stable" version will be available...or for that matter, any package?
What might be keeping these packages back? The portage "stable" version is quite old and does not seem to play well with the latest version that my wife uses on her MS Windows machine...
Any recommendations?

To see why it is hard masked look at /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:

Code:

# Torsten Veller <tove@gentoo.org> (21 Jul 2007)
# Masked for testing
>=app-office/gnucash-2.2.0

So, you should test it and then look for a bug report where you can say "worksforme," etc.

And here is the bug:

thanks embobo,
Every day I realize how little I understand the development cycle of gentoo releases. ;)
I have a starting point now.

I am just compiling GnuCash 2.2.1 and it seems to go very smooth on my Gentoo! I am a great user and fan of GnuCash.
