Hello,
i am having problems booting Vista with GRUB. First: my Partition Layout.
Former working Configuration:
20 GB FAT32 Partition -> Win XP
some (too small for Gentoo) Linux Partitions
50 GB NTFS Partition ->Vista
Now i deleted the FAT32 Partition and made it an ext3 partition. I also moved the whole Root Directory there. Here is the new Partition Layout.
Code: | Disk /dev/hda: 100.0 GB, 100030242816 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 12161 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 2550 20482843+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 2551 2555 40162+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 2556 3889 10715355 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda4 3890 12161 66444840 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda5 2556 2677 979933+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda6 2678 3085 3277228+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 3343 3889 4393746 83 Linux
/dev/hda8 3086 3342 2064321 83 Linux
Partition table entries are not in disk order |
Well it seems like Vista had some Files on the FAT32 Partition... it refuses to boot. I already changed the /boot/grub/grub.conf, to point to the new Device hd(0,3), but Vista only shows some text. (Will post this text after a reboot)
I tried recovery with the Vista DVD, but this did also not work out (Just told me to plug off removable devices and reboot, had no removable Devices attached).
I know that this is not only a Linux related Questions, but maybe there are some of you here who live in "both worlds" and can help me _________________ Never Give In, Never, Never, Never

I don't know what to do to go about fixing the problem (...recovery something or other, maybe...) but I think you're right; windoze probably implicated both hard drive partitions it could read in the boot process. it seems to like to do so. _________________ Configuring a Firewall? if the XP was the first partition in it (as it sounds like you said), then the Vista partition doesn't actually have any boot information, it was all on the XP. which is why it now doesnt work. you'll have to rebuild Vista'd BCD on the Vista partition. i had to go through this same thing removing a (broken) XP install from my XP/Vista dual boot to install Gentoo on my desktop
here's what youll have to do, using the command line from the Vista disc
1) Use Diskpart to set the windows Vista partition to "active"
2) Use bootrec to fix the mbr "bootrec /mbr" and to rebuild BCD "bootrec /rebuildbcd"
3) Reboot to the recovery GUI
4) Select the option to repair a boot problem. _________________ sRc//Conda - The Anaconda |
