I'm probably missing something since I've never tried layman before, nor used git, but I can't even get the layman -a kde to work. I get:

* Running command "/usr/bin/git clone "git://www2.mailstation.de/git/genkde4svn-pub.git/" "/usr/portage/local/layman/kde""...
/usr/bin/git: warning: invalid extra options ignored

layman -L lists kde in the list. I've tried the various links in the Wiki and they either return a 404 or other errors. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Seems like you accidentally emerged app-misc/git instead of dev-util/git...

Bah, that's it. I knew it was something simple. I wonder who decided to name those like that...

If anyone's interested, here's a VMware virtual machine with KDE4 emerged. KDE4 still needs setting up, but maybe some people will find it to be a useful starting point.

size: ~900MB
users: root, kde4
pass: gentoo4lyfe (both accounts)
http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~vladimir/kde4.tar.gz

Instructions:

You need vmplayer 2 or vmware 6 to run the machine. If you have trouble with software in portage, use the vmware overlay (layman -a vmware)

emerge app-emulation/vmware-workstation (or >=app-emulation/vmware-player-2* but I didn't try it), app-emulation/vmware-modules

Start /etc/init.d/vmware. You'll be told to configure the thing. Do it and restart the service, making sure all drivers load

If vmplayer fails, run "VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=yes vmplayer"

got everything emerged and its getting into KDE just fine

...almost. i have no icons for anything. I get an error that says "Cannot load system tray icon" when i log in, and there are no icons. when I was doing it last night the SVN server must have been bogged down, it kept hanging when starting to emerge a couple of the times. i think it must have skipped a package somewhere, but im not sure what. tried reemerging kdeartwork, but that didnt help. not sure where to look now

its not kdeartwork that has the default iconset (it does have a ton of extra ones though) its kdebase . I'm not experiancing the issue, but just keep reemerging, also try running revdep-rebuild

Try this, it is a script, that takes every package with src-code in /usr/portage/distfiles/git-src/ and checks if there is a update.
If so it re-emerges all needed packages in correct order.

I have bad kde-svn update today.
I got QObject::connect: Cannot connect QDBusErrorHelper::pendingCallError(QDBusError,QDBusMessage) to KWallet::Wallet::(null) problem with kopete - no connecting to any service/. I run kded4 from konsole and then kopete works ok.
Shortcuts not work (like alt-f2 and alt-tab).
Troubles with non transparent tray still here.

Why kded4 doesn't launch at startup?...

thanx for the script!!

I ran the script and it appears to work. I should then re-emerge the packages. gets rather confusing without version numbers

If someone is interested, I've managed to solve my problem with Phonon by deleting ~/.kdesvn/share/config/phonondevicerc file.

Who knows, is there a way to change size of icons in "System tray" plasmoid on KDE panel? By default it is 22x22 I think, which is smaller than other icons on the panel.

Well, if I press the logout button, nothing happens and I get this into .xsession-errors: Opening item with URL "leave:/logout". Shutdown/Restart/Start New Session buttons don't work either.

I've tried to logout from terminal too, using qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0, it does nothing as well and gives no errors.

Just noticed at http://developer.kde.org/~dirk/dashboard/ there are more extragear svn packages in trunk that are building successfully ( total of 8 ). I synced the overlay, and there are still only plasma, plugins, and yakuake ebuilds there.

I was wondering if there are plans to add more extragear ebuilds to the overlay any time soon? (Not complaining- I know the overlay devs are very busy)

If not, I might try it myself, however I've never created an ebuild myself. I figure I can use one of them as a template, and edit in new info for the ones now in trunk. My tentative procedure would be something like:

1. Make a new directory for the new ebuild in /usr/portage/local/layman/kde/kde-misc.
2. Copy over an existing extragear "template" ebuild, and edit it to reflect the desired package (new name, deps, url, etc.).
3. CD to the new ebuild's directory, and digest the new ebuild.
4. Try emerging the new package.

EDIT: Oh yeah- add appropriate lines to package.keyword and package.use.

Assuming I have all the info correct for the specific package, would this be the correct procedure, and have I left anything out? I've read the Gentoo ebuild docs in the past (of course I'll review them before proceeding).

Any advice from the overlay devs (or anyone else) is greatly appreciated.

You should try it by yourself :)

I think the overlay devs are kind of busy correcting bugs, etc, in order to have kde4 hard-masked in Portage.

Your "receip" should work and should not be too difficult to perform, I suggest you to try it out and post your results here :)

Note that I didn't do a lot of ebuilds...

Amazing! Maybe I actually know what I'm doing this time! My ebuild checked out the svn extragear-graphics package r762306, and seems to be working- compiling now at 42%. :D

Assuming it completes, and actually works, I'll post more later, with my ebuild and procedure I used to create it, if anyone wants it.

To Src:
Make sure that your QT is build with the PNG use flag. Its also what is breaking your logout/shutdown I had the same problem.

I still don't have a solution for the Plasmoids not having text.

OK- extragear-graphics package r762306 compiled, installed, and packages show up in kickoff menu, and launch. Here's the ebuild. Make a directory /usr/portage/local/layman/kde/kde-misc/extragear-graphics, and copy this ebuild (name it extragear-graphics-9999.4.ebuild ) there. CD to that directory, and run
Code:
ebuild extragear-graphics-9999.4.ebuild digest
Then just emerge kde-misc/extragear-graphics. Instead of using an extragear ebuild for a template, I used the kdegraphics-9999.4 ebuild in the overlay, and just did a few minor edits (shown commented), as I figured all the depends and other stuff would already be in there for any extragear-graphics stuff. Turned out it worked (this time) .

Nice :)

I would put it on a local overlay (not in kde's, since it is managed by layman with a git repo... I wonder if it may cause git to fail if the "real" ebuild comes into the repository...

Hmmmm.. I did think it might get overwritten when I do layman -s kde, but never thought it would possibly cause git to fail. Maybe an overlay dev will advise on this. Of course when a "real" one for that package is added, I'd remove my hacked ebuild.

Rebuilt the SVN today, heres what ive noticed

1. the knotify 900 wakeups has been fixed

Code:
21.4% ( 86.3)          knotify4 : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
  15.4% ( 61.9)       <interrupt> : uhci_hcd:usb1, nvidia
  12.4% ( 50.0)       <interrupt> : PS/2 keyboard/mouse/touchpad
   7.9% ( 31.9)       firefox-bin : futex_wait (hrtimer_wakeup)
   5.8% ( 23.2)                 X : do_setitimer (it_real_fn)

2. kopete - yahoo still crashes kopete on login

never saw this issue before the rebuild when connecting to jabber
Code:
SSL support could not be initialized for account xxxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com. This is most likely because the QCA TLS plugin is not installed on your system.

3. changing icon sizes still have no effect in appearance settings

4. effects settings still do nothing
