I need reiser4 support, so I've been using viper-sources, then made my own patchset: ragnarok-sources. Looks like I'm going to be using kamikaze-sources soon.

Well, vanilla isn't on the list of supported sources according to what nightmorph listed, so that won't happen :)

Gentoo sources, because of the framebuffer and I always use them, because they are rocksolid :)

Traditionally, I've used gentoo-sources, but I've recently switched to vanilla-sources, since they tend to show up in the tree right away, and I'm impatient when it comes to compiling new kernels.

I use BSD, you insensitive clod! I've been meaning to fully rebuild my desktop the past couple of weeks, and I want to try out the new Kamikaze when I do.

I use hardened-sources with my own config for my root-server and the testing-machine (vmware).

vanilla-sources are the sources just like you found them from http://www.kernel.org/

If something is broken, it is the kernel team the one that should fix it. Gentoo can't do anything about that, so Gentoo can't support that kernel.

If something breaks and the Gentoo team manages to fix it, then a patch is added to Gentoo sources -I suppose-. Vanilla is meant to be "vanilla", no additions, no changes, no fixes. It is the whole point of having a vanilla kernel. That belongs upstream.

EDIT: I try a number of sources kernels, not necesarily from portage. For regular work I use just a vanilla kernel with a couple of custom patches.

1. openvz-sources,
2. xen-sources,
3. gentoo-sources,
4. vanilla-sources,
5. hardened-sources,
6. suspend2-sources,
7. vserver-sources
8. sparc-sources (twice in my life),

in that order.

I use hardened-sources all the time as I mostly install Gentoo in a server environment. However, I find that this is usually the first profile in portage to get broken most often with masked packages that you need!

Nice, stable, nothing breaks, no drama, fully supported, no insanely short/long update schedule.

Exactly. I also use gentoo-sources, but I compile with my own config.

same on my machines ;) I haven't been using gentoo for a long time yet so I try to stick to the standards (as far as they exist in gentoo).

gentoo-sources - nice feature patch set (everything I want, at least) and very solid. that kernel alone is a big plus for gentoo as far as I'm concerned. Great job by the Gentoo kernel team.
