hi there i have some files in .mkv and .mp4 format and would like to to view them using vlc...the problem is that there is only the sound in the background...by that i mean that i can only hear for example the music that plays in the background and not the people talking in the movie...subtitles and video are all displayed correctly...i just cannot hear the people talking...when i watch the files in kaffeine i have no problem at all...what might be the problem with vlc?? thanks in advance...

sounds more like a audio encoding problem. I had similar problem when I set up wrong speaker configuration. Generally If you are using DTS background sounds play on 4 speakers and people talking on central speaker. If you don't have 5.1 or configuration is wrong you wont hear one channel. Please check your settings.

anyone could help me with the problem i described in my previous posts?? with kaffeine there's no such problem with the sound...only with vlc?? is this really a problem of configuring the right way the audio channels?? but why isn't this happening with kaffeine?? maybe it has to do with the use flags vlc is built??

i too have problem with vlc sound

after emerge -Du world in my desktop vlc plays no sound at all.
all other players mplayer, noatun, amarok, kaffiene audacious etc.
all play sound ok
vlc plays video ok. no sound from video files or audio files.
i have tried re emerging vlc, wxgtk, etc.
the trouble still continues.

onr other installation in another partition is working ok and in my laptop vlc is ok.
could not find whats problem with vlc .it is not file format problem, as same mp3,wav,video play ok in other players.

What are the use flags that you have for vlc? Also, which version of ffmpeg are you using?

Code:

The easiest fix would be to use ffmpeg as/of 20070525 or lower. After that date there has been a significant change in ffmpeg.

The second easiest is to use mplayer instead of vlc, as that has already taken account of the change in ffmpeg.

Alternatively you could use ffmpeg from svn and vlc from svn. I have a pair of not ready ebuilds that work with some effort. The vlc ebuild is based on that from http://gentoo.zugaina.org/media-video.html.en. That does not quite work as some of the compile options have changed.

there are some properties only vlc has.
mplayer is not quite replacement for vlc
vlc can paly by opening a folder and all files in the folder like a playlist.
which no other player has er i have not seen any other
all audio formats including .wav it can play again all others lack
if at all possible it should be repaired to work.

i did not mean to say path is not there
open has files folder menu in vlc which is not there in mplayer.[if you ask to open folder it will play files in sequence inside the folder -- cool feature]
if you do by folder path it plays the first file only.
i like mplayer for its other features
but by convenience vlc is a capable substitute for any media player
i have nothing against other players. infact i have installed all of the available media players in my gentoo which work without conflict and crash

From my tests, the only media player that works well with the new ffmpeg is, of course, mplayer. Xine, vlc, totem etal all have problems.
