Hi!
For some fu**ed up reason, Alsa works only with amarok (which now broke for me), and RealPlayer!!!
with anything else (kaffeine, aplay, alsaplayer, vlc, mplayer), either the program totally freezes, or I get this:
Code:
keinstein src # aplay /usr/share/psi/sound/chat1.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/psi/sound/chat1.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:961: Unable to install hw params:
ACCESS:  RW_INTERLEAVED
FORMAT:  S16_LE
SUBFORMAT:  STD
SAMPLE_BITS: 16
FRAME_BITS: 16
CHANNELS: 1
RATE: 44100
PERIOD_TIME: (21333 21334)
PERIOD_SIZE: (940 941)
PERIOD_BYTES: (1880 1882)
PERIODS: (15 17)
BUFFER_TIME: (341315 341316)
BUFFER_SIZE: 15052
BUFFER_BYTES: 30104
TICK_TIME: 0

WTF?

Sound in Flash/Firefox doesn't work either, but at least doesnt crash the browser (which actually appears pretty unstable right now, crashing often, to be accurate)

I had an systemupdate 3 days ago, this is what changed:

Code:
     Sat Mar 17 06:37:09 2007 >>> media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14_rc2-r3
     Thu Aug  2 03:09:44 2007 >>> media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14

     Fri Mar 30 02:11:12 2007 >>> media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.14_rc3
     Mon Jul 30 01:49:42 2007 >>> media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.14

     Sat Mar 17 06:37:09 2007 >>> media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14_rc2-r3
     Thu Aug  2 03:09:44 2007 >>> media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14

     Fri Mar 30 03:35:44 2007 >>> media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14_rc3
     Mon Jul 30 03:38:49 2007 >>> media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14a-r1
     Fri Aug  3 17:24:32 2007 >>> media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14a-r1

     Wed Oct  4 06:28:22 2006 >>> media-libs/alsa-oss-1.0.12
     Thu Aug  2 05:20:56 2007 >>> media-libs/alsa-oss-1.0.14

damn I believe I screwed the whole system... running emerge -e world right now, not sure if it'll help...

12 is not the same as 14. Get those version numbers in sync. All of them, which contain "alsa" in their name. And to forestall the inevitable:

Follow wiki article carefully.

no, they're all 14, I just posted the old version numbers so you can see what I had before, look at the timestamp...

Code:

Do you have strange CFLAGS etc.? Have you tried moving /etc/asound.conf and ~/.asoundrc somewhere else?

*bump*

I'm soooo clueless.....

If just amarok and realplayer wouldn't work, so I could get a better sense of what's going on... but this is just sick...

I've found another post with the same problem. There solution was to downgrade alsa lower then 1.0.14.

When you only put =media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14a-r1 in /etc/portage/package.mask it will do the trick.

Woot ! I had this same weird behaviour since ALSA update, and this incantation saved my day !
Are all these plugins really needed, by the way ?

Many thanks 8)
