Two days ago I decided to be a bit more daring than usual and did a reinstall of Gentoo using GCC 3.1 plus the following string of optimizations in make.conf (this is on a P3-667/coppermine) | Code: | | -march=i686 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -fpmath=sse -msse -mmx -frerun-loop-opt -frerun-cse-after-loop |
There's only one thing I can possibly say: wow. I don't think I've ever had such a snappy, responsive system (regardless of OS). This is important to me, as Gentoo is my desktop OS/Distro of choice. The speed of the system dazes me and in this case, being dazed is definitely a good thing.
I really only wanted to write here to tell everyone how extremely impressed I am by the overall quality of the distribution, the ease at which one can change small things such as compile flags and have them propagate throughout the system and the incredible convenience of the portage tree. It's really grown on me fast, more so than any other system or distribution has (Used FreeBSD, Mandrake, Slackware, Debian, Crux and Suse in the past). Gentoo might not be for everyone, but it's just right for people like me, who like to tweak everything.
Keep up the good work, Gentoo team. I'm not looking back! _________________ Where there's a will, there's a relative. |
