Um, yeah, so, everything except for gthumb compiled with no halting errors, but it seems that gnome-session-manager STILL CRASHES!

I have no idea what the problem is, as I haven't changed any files at all. It has that same (i think) segmentation fault error, and it kills gnome/ximian.

Two questions:
1. What version of gnome-base/libbonoboui do you have installed right now?
2. Have you tried explicity (re-) "emerge gnome-base/gnome-session/gnome-session-2.2.2-r30.ebuild" ?

I'm not really sure about what to put in my .xinitrc file.
If I set "exec gnome-wm" I get an black desktop with no menu bars or anything. The mouse cursor is also there. When I start it with an Eterm aswell I'm able to start all of the gnome features, like theme configuration and stuff. These things work, cuz I can see the way bars change in mozilla. Using gnome in rc.conf still fails, gdm aswell. I can use gdm to launch flux/kde, but not gnome.

icarus1983: Can you please try logging into a failsafe session (just an xterm, no window manager) and running "gnome-session"?
If it crashes, try re-emerging gnome-session.
If it still crashes, can you please post the versions of gnome-session and gtk+ you have installed?

Just what I thought!
I'm suppose to have something called gnome-session
I have no such cmd (tried both with root and user)

I have these versions installed:
Code:

[ebuild   R  ] gnome-base/gnome-session-2.2.2-r30  +xd2gen2
[ebuild   R  ] x11-libs/gtk+-2.2.2-r30  -tiff -doc +jpeg -debug +xd2gen2

I have tried re-emerging gnome-session, after reading the previous post.

You don't have a /usr/bin/gnome-session despite having emerged it "successfully"? Okay, this is bad.
Can you please put the complete compile log up somewhere and link to it? (emerge gnome-session &> log.txt)

Yes, I started that when leaving the office today. It will be out first thing tomorrow morning.. thats GMT +1 :)
I just might stop by the office later tonight.

og, and btw, that xscreensaver issue was somehow resolved after re-emerging mozilla with gtk2 ?! (yeah, I'm at home now) I'm looking forware to using xd2 on all of my gentoo box'es and lap-tops :) I'm dedicating them for testing, heh.. as long as it doesn't fuck up my fluxbox 8)

Hate to burst that bubble, but I rm -rf'ed /usr/local/portage, as there was only xd2gen2 ebuilds in it, then remade it with the new tar, so there's no way anything hung around from the first release ;).

I'm at my internship now, but I'll check these later tonight.

One other thing, I did manage to get the newer XMMS ebuild to compile, unlike the first one (r30?) which did not compile on my machine. Hopefully that's good news to all :p.

Well, unless I really messed up there is no gthumb ebuild in the tarball, and:
Code:
bengal portage # grep -R gthumb *
gnome-base/gnome/gnome-2.2.2-r30.ebuild:                media-gfx/gthumb
media-gfx/CVS/Entries:D/gthumb////
media-gfx/gthumb/CVS/Repository:xd2gen2/overlay/media-gfx/gthumb
media-gfx/gthumb/files/CVS/Repository:xd2gen2/overlay/media-gfx/gthumb/files

Nonetheless, a build log (linked, not pasted please!) would be useful.

Unless icarus1983 beats you to the punch, could you also put up the build log for gnome-session when you try re-merging it?

I had the same error with gnome repeatedly crashing, and segfaulting but it stopped after rebooting and some log in - log out as root.
In fact I have no idea what was the problem nor what was the solution.

had to stop by the office and check things out :)

And re-emerged gnome-session and made a log file like requested. The log file crashed my MozillaFirebird, mebbe we found another bug ? Anyway, could read it in lynx, and wget it.

http://cornykidz.net/gnome-session.log

there is an error that repeat itself 10-15 times during the emerge, still no 'gnome-session' cmd

I believe that I can execute gnome-session, except I think it just dies after the gnome-session-manager segfaults, but I can only say this because I ran "exec gnome-session" out of the startx script, and I can't check it now.

As for gthumb, I'm confused as well, but it doesn't matter, as I just injected it, so it's not causing any more problems.

When I get home I'll try to re-emerge gnome-session, if openoffice-ximian has finished compiling (it should be done, but who knows with open-office). Also, I do have a server, but I'm, um, not supposed to have one (silly ISP :p). If I do post a log file, would someone else be able to host it? I know they're not big, but it's more the many http requests going to my IP that worry me.

1)
Code:
ratbert ian # emerge -p libbonoboui

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] gnome-base/libbonoboui-2.2.3-r30

2) http://wolos.d2g.com:85/gnome-session.txt

I don't have all the crazy errors that icarus1983 does, which means that something is kinda screwy somewhere :\. I'll try a bit more testing myself, see if I can fix anything.

That's on my server, so I ask that unless you need to see the file, please do not load it, as I don't want threatening letters from my ISP. Thanks :).

I synced, and ran an emerge -Up world, before (once more) re-emerging gnome-session. And now it looks like gnome-session is where it should be :)

my emerge.log: http://cornykidz.net/logs/icarus.emerge.log

some of the packages are of no matter, but others might be.[/code]

Huston we have a lift off!!

I put exec gnome-session (now that I've finally got it) into my .xinitrc and fired up! This is the default desktop that I got
http://cornykidz.net/ximian-gnome.png
It even made me a icon for my cross-over iexplorer.. lol, forgot that I even had that one. :) Other apps that I use in fluxbox doesn't seem to play very nice with my new gnome. (i.e. MozillaFirebird crashes when clicking to fast) guess I should re-build some of them. I'm looking forward to playing around with this, and I'll get right back to you..

iiha!

I have several strange things...

Firebird is working fine for me, using it now. Version .6. Maybe it's not the latest one that should be working?

I think I'm using the default gnome session manager, as I get the Gnome image, not the "ximianed" image when it loads. Whatever the case, it works now, as I've left it over night at least once, and it hasn't crashed.

Now my only problem is trying to make openoffice-ximian work with xd2gen2 :p.

The OpenOffice-Ximian ebuild thread, duh :p.

I'm having troubles with the latest ebuild, and I'm not sure why. Nothing related to xd2gen2, except that both use ximian patches :).

1) That image (would be) provided by x11-themes/ximian-artwork, which isn't ours.
2) We can't use Ximian's trademarks.

I got it working here (yay), and it runs great. The only problem I have run into is that xscreensaver issue already reported. I had to inject it to get it recognize the dependency.

Nice job!

EDIT: Updating to the latest patch in stable made the problem go away.

First: thanks for all this stuff, works like a charm (almost). I think I'm gonna change from kde to ximian-gnome for a while now...

But still there is a problem:
After running Gnome for some time, measure that in hours, let's say half a day, some applications, most notably those I compiled from the new ebuilds like nautilus or whatever take over 5 minutes to show up! (if they ever do)
I checked the process-list and always found the wanted app show up there, but now window nothing, and this "system-monitor" says these processes are "sleeping". I wouldn't mind if there was an option to wake them up... ;-)

Any help, suggestions?
(my CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -mmmx -m3dnow -pipe")

greets,
psyeye

(and keep up the good work!)

Update:
Just uploaded the third beta. This is just a few bugfixes for beta2.

DO NOT FILE ANY BUGS RELATED TO THESE EBUILDS ON THE GENTOO.ORG BUGZILLA!

Changes since beta2.

Upgrade instructions:
1. Download the patch against beta2.
2. cd to your ${PORTDIR_OVERLAY}
3. Apply the patch
3. a. bzcat xd2gen2-beta2_beta3.patch.bz2 | patch -p0 (--dry-run)
4. Upgrade gnome
4. a. ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge (-pv) gnome

Installation instructions:
1. Download the tarball
2. Unpack the tarball to your ${PORTDIR_OVERLAY}
3. Add "xd2gen2" and "ppds" to your USE setting in /etc/make.conf
4. ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge (-pv) gnome

There is another step that you must complete before you will be able to successfully install XD2GEN2, but it will be obvious what to do when you reach it. It is a check to ensure that people RTFM.

Please report any issues (after checking that they aren't already reported) that you experience with the ebuilds themselves as bugs on http://bugs.breakmygentoo.net/ in the "Gnome Software" product and the "XD2" component.
DO NOT FILE ANY BUGS RELATED TO THESE EBUILDS ON THE GENTOO.ORG BUGZILLA!

What still needs to be done (help wanted!):
1. Menus
2. Doorman

It never was on ibiblio in the first place, shame on me for forgetting to RESTRICT="nomirror." I'll update the ebuild (I'm assuming its a version bump) asap and release a patch.
