Many thanks to everyone who have tried to help me,but I have decided to forget about trying to install my own kernel for the time being.
I need to gain more info about a lot of things,I feel so helpless when you good people suggest how to do something and I have not got a clue what you are talking about.
If someone could tell me how to reinstate my internet connection on my original install(from the live cd) so that I can gain more knowledge about Gentoo,I would be most grateful.
Special thanks to NeddySeagoon for all his patience and understanding. |

dioon,
The liveCD kernel is not very good at loading the module you need for your network card.
This post may help, depending on the exact problem.
As you have discovered, overwriting your working kernel is a bad move. Grub allows lots of different kernels to be installed at the same time, so you can choose one at boot. If its your new kernel and its broken, just choose one of the others to get booted and fix it.
Everyone makes broken kernels from time to time.
There is a fairly old browsable install here which you may find useful to look at.
I know it works - its from my P3 laptop with all the security information removed. _________________ Regards,

dioon,
The forums go read only in 9 hours. Lets move to IRC.
ping me on freenode in #gentoo, #gentoo-uk or #gentoo-chat. #gentoo is one of the biggest channels on freenode, so if you are new to IRC, its not going to be a good place to start this weekend. _________________ Regards,

New to IRC? Ive never even heard of it ,let alone access it,all I want is to be able to get on the internet.
Are you sure in this instance that a fresh install is not a good idea,my o/s seems so messed up. |

dioon,
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) allows real time line at at time screen and keyboard conversations between groups as small as 2 and as large as you want. Unfortunately, it needs internet access, just like posting here.
There is a text mode client on the liveCD called irssi. If you can get on the internet by booting the liveCD, run irssi in a console.
When it starts, type the following commands
| Code: | /connect irc.freenode.org
/join #gentoo-uk
ping NeddySeagoon | that will highlight my #gentoo-uk tab, providing I'm online. Hopefully, I will spot it and reply.
There are IRC clients for windows too, if you have to use windows. They will have similar commands _________________ Regards,
