I've recently changed the version of gcc to switch to gcc v4.1.2. I've done it thanks to the gentoo manuel for the migration of gcc. I've found no error before trying to print something with the new version of CUPS.
My printer is a CANON S4500 well supported by CUPS with GIMP-PRINT drivers. Since I've switched to CUPS v1.2.10-r1 I can't print and I don't know why. The configuration of my Canon haven't changed before long ! My printer is well connected and the kernel found it !

In the error_log of CUPS I can found:

I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:09 +0200] Job 2768 queued on "Canon_S4500_USB_1" by "root".
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:09 +0200] Started filter /usr/libexec/cups/filter/texttops (PID 2498) for job 2768.
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:09 +0200] Started filter /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstops (PID 2499) for job 2768.
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:09 +0200] Started filter /usr/libexec/cups/filter/pstoraster (PID 2500) for job 2768.
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:09 +0200] Started filter /usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertoprinter (PID 2501) for job 2768.
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:09 +0200] Started backend /usr/libexec/cups/backend/usb (PID 2502) for job 2768.
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:27 +0200] commptr=""
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:27 +0200] Started "/usr/libexec/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi" (pid=2504)
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:40 +0200] commptr=""
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:40 +0200] Started "/usr/libexec/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi" (pid=2505)
I [25/Aug/2007:10:29:52 +0200] commptr=""

(the two end lines appeard each time CUPS try to reprint the job that the printer don't print)

My CUPS version is 1.2.10-r1, GIMP-PRINT version is 4.2.7 and ghostscript-esp version is 8.15.3. build respectively with the following USE arguments: "X dbus jpeg ldap nls pam png ppds ssl tiff -php -samba -slp", "cups foomaticdb gtk nls ppds readline" et "X cups gtk xml -cjk -threads".

It is possible a not identify lib is blocking a bin that is needed by CUPS to print.

I've tried to run revdep-rebuild without effect. I've tried a lot of time to restart the deamon still without effect. I don't know how to fix it an I need my printer able to print for working.

Thanks to help me.

abbatux,

In the CUPS web interface, create a new printer that points to the same real printer.
Restart CUPS. Does this new printer work ?

abbatux,

We need to see the detailed log of a CUPS session then.
In your /var/log/cups directory, you have a file called error_log. Read the end of that tail -n <lines> is useful as its likely to be quite big.
Any hints ?

Anything strange in the other logs page_log, or access_log.

If you don't spot anything, we can set CUPS loglevel to debug and rename your old logs, so when we print a very simple one page job, everything is logged. This results in some huge logs.

I've switch cups in debug mode. When I send a job to cups the result of the error_log is:

abbatux,

Your pastebin shows some permissions problems. Do you need to run etc-update, or whatever tool you use for updating configuration files?

abbatux,

There are some permissions issues to fix still then.
As a test, can you attempt to print as the root user.
If that fails, its more than permissions

Finally, I've dungraded esp ghoscript and rebuilded cups and gimp-print.
It's not a very good solution but it fix my problems. Now I can use correctly my printer.

I think I should report a bug, but I don't know if it was esp ghostscript or gimp-print which failled.

Thanks NeddySeagoon

abbatux,

You can report a bug in pieces.
First search bugzillia to make sure you are first Either add what you know to an existing open bug or start a new one.

If you are prepared to do some more investigation, add to the bug later. If you will do more later, say so when you start the bug, or it may be closed for insufficient information.

To swap between versions of packages quickly, make binaries, either but using quickpkg, for installed packages or by adding buildpkg to your FEATURES. With the binaries in place, you can use emerge -K =<pkg-ver> to install from your very own binary.
