Abstract
This guide should help you comfigure Xmms to play AAC audio files.
Summary
I made the mistake of putting my collection of mp3s and CDs into iTunes and then organizing it. I really don't want to maintain two different collections of the same music in different formats. The obvious solution was to find an AAC compatible music player for Linux.
This guide will not help you get around iTune's stupid DRM stuff. All my mp3s were from CDs so DRM wasn't a problem.
Step One: You need the libs!
Grab the necessary libraries.

# USE="xmms" emerge -pv faad2 faac
# USE="xmms" emerge -v faad2 faac

You'll need the xmms USE flag to make portage compile the plugin with faad2. I should also note that I needed to use the ~ppc version of id3lib which was a dependency for faad2. Your milage may vary. I'd expect the x86 version to compile without problems.
Step Two: Rock Out!
Fire up xmms and it should've compiled the plugin, added it and even activated itself by default. All you need to do is open up some AAC files and they should play.
There are also two plugins for AAC files at Xmms's website but I could get neither to compile on my iBook. If anyone has gotten those to work I'd like to hear about it.
That's it! There's not much to this guide but when I was searching around for how to do this I couldn't find anything very definitive. Thanks to bk0 and SadMac. Most of this is there work/suggestions. I just put it one place.
