Hi.
"Activing mdev" slows down the boot process.
I'd like knowing what mdev is, if i really need it, so i can reduce my boot time.
I already tried to usa init-ng but it doesn't work

Thanks

I am having the same problem,

mdev is not part of the init process, it is part of the kernel boot process. What I can understand is that mdev is something similar or replacement to udev (through busybox?).

Also, if I am right, I have busybox installed, what is it doing on a laptop?! Isn't it for embedded and small systems?!

It is a part of busybox which acts as an analog to udev, the description of it given in the source refers to it as "a mini-udev".

You are correct, most likely the system boots to using a ramdisk (probably created via genkernel) to perform initial configuration. While it is entirely possible to configure a general use system to boot using busybox, it is unlikely that you would be unaware of such a configuration on a Gentoo system you administrate.

Not exclusively.

Well, I've got the same problem on two machines. Both are x86.

I tried the following with no results:

genkernel-3.4.7, gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r2, busybox-1.6.1
genkernel-3.4.7, gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r2, busybox-1.5.1
genkernel-3.4.8, gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r2, busybox-1.5.1
genkernel-3.4.8, gentoo-sources-2.6.21-r4, busybox-1.6.1

My third machine is running fine with gentoo-sources-2.6.21-r4.
It is only a guess but I think this problem is related to the update of the linux-headers. Because the kernel of my third machine was compiled before the linux-headers were updated. I cannot say which version of genkernel and busybox were used to compile this one.
If I have the time I will test if the linux-headers are the malfactor. It would be nice if you can test it, too.

Best regards from Germany!
