What's the best way to proceed if my NIC isn't supported by gentoo's install? I have a 3c990 that I have a driver for, but the module I built for RedHat 7.3 weill not install in gentoo, and it won't be possible to build a new one for gentoo until I have gcc and the kernel source installed. Any and all suggestions welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

by the way, if any gentoo devlopers read this, it'd be really great if you could add support for this NIC in a furture release. The driver can be obtained from http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linuxdownloads.htm. Mandrake provides support for it in their newest distribution (although that's the only one I know of), so there shouldn't be any problem incorporating the drivers into your own distribution. Thanks again.

So I guess there's just no way of getting around this short of waiting for a future release and hoping the driver gets included?

You might try NE2000 compatible driver, or if your manual mentions compatibility with another type of card.
