How can I copy my boot partition to a CD-RW so I can boot from the CD-RW? _________________ gentoo good to be true |

That's not exactly what I'm looking for, thanks though. I should have been more clear. I want all of the /boot partition, including grub, to be on a cdrom, nothing more nothing less. _________________ gentoo good to be true |

That's more like it. I was able to get grub to boot from the cdrom but then this error:
Code: | root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.21-2-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/vg--whole-lv--root ro
[Linux-bzimage, setup = 0x1e00, size=0x17d5b7]
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.21-2-amd64
[Linux-initrd @ 0x379b5000, 0x63aeec bytes]
savedefault
Error 29: Disk write error
Press any key to continue... |
I'm unsure what is being written at this point. I know the CD-RW is not writeable at this point but I didn't think that anything is written to the /boot partition during boot, only read from it.
It looks like this page page may have the answer... I'm going to give it a try. _________________ gentoo good to be true |

Can you please post your grub.conf or menu.lst you've put on the bootable cdrom. _________________ Hello 911? How are you? |

You might want to look at lilo and mkrescue. I have in the past installed lilo only for the rescue cd it creates. _________________ John

It's working. Thank you for your help massimo.
drescherjm, at this time I am going to stick with grub unless lilo / mkrescue may help with my next step...
All other partitions are located on an encrypted partition that uses lvm2. At this time, my LUKS passphrase must be entered from the keyboard. How can I have LUKS read the passphrase from my /boot partition? _________________ gentoo good to be true |

In my case I still have grub installed on the machine but I just emerged lilo, Created a /etc/lilo.conf and then ran mkrescue. Other than that I still boot the local machine with grub. But as for weather it would help with your passphrase I doubt it would be any easier than the steps you have made to get a bootable grub cd. Its just a easy way to get a bootable cd with your kernel and initramfs on it.
BTW, I may try this booting with grub method as well just cause I like the fancy grub menus. _________________ John
