I noticed the request to shift off of the oregon state mirror and haven't been able to figure out yet how to change mirror on an existing installation. Where is the mirror's URL kept?

Even better:
| Code: | emerge mirrorselect
mirrorselect -a -s5 |
which will scan for the 5 closest mirrors to you and put them into your make.conf file for you. |

Changing mirrors really does help a hell of a lot with emerging. It seems most people must be just leaving their configs to go to the oregon state mirror as it is just so slow. I was getting about 60kb/s max at work (8mb leased line) and 10kb/s at home (512k ADSL). I switched to mirror.ac.uk and its stomping along at 800kb/s plus at work and 60kb/s at home. Certainly an improvement!
I think the mirrors settings should be in the docs as 'you must change this to your local', during the install. |
