Hello,

I became somewhat accustomed to nano over the years, but I miss the undo feature that continues being vaporware even if it is in the todo list since ancient times. I am in search for an editor which can do what nano does, but that can also undo.

What nano does, for me, basically: it has a small memory footprint, it works in console, is is easy to learn and use and it has a good colorization for many file types. Undo is the only feature I miss in a small editor like nano.

Please, I know what vim and emacs are, and also use them when need to. If you are going to talk about any of these, better don't say anything. I am just in search of a substitute for nano.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

How about app-editors/ne? It looks like what you're talking about: http://ne.dsi.unimi.it/

It seems nice, and I will investigate it. But I looked at the online html manuals, and it doesn't seem to have syntax colorization support.

If seems to support utf8 as nano does, that is another requirement I forgot on my first post.

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

Until someone ports EDIT (From DOS) to Linux, my fav. terminal editor will continue to be mcedit.

It's part of Midnight Commander, so you'll need to emerge mc to get this (And if you haven't already, WHY NOT?!?!  ).

It's fatter than vi and nano/pico but slimmer than emacs.

Supports gpm/xterm mouse, colourization, multiple undo/redo, advanced search/replace (With regexps! :D).

Does have some 'quirks' (Bloody auto-indenting!).

I like it.

I didn't see a smiley, so I have to assume you're serious about that.

I player a bit with it, and I think I can stick with it if I don't find anything else.

In the way I also discovered fte, it seemes a console text editor on the screenshots, but it is really based on X. And it seems to work the way I like it. I will also play with that for X, but I mostly use the terminal to edit stuff, unless it is something big with lots of files.

Thank you. I am still open to suggestions, but I think I can learn to live with mcedit. :)

Regards.

OK, this is something I've been meaning to ask for awhile, but keep forgetting to: i92guboj -- what is your avatar?

Hehehe, actually, it is me, in a mask party or whatever it is called in english. I am wearing black and with my face painted black as well. Don't worry, I usually don't look that way

Much regards :)
