Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
When trying to download the x86 tarball I run out of disk space.
The tarball is 111 MB.
I used the command du -ms /*/ and it appears there is enough space.
Any thoughts?
and I did do {cd /mnt/gentoo}

Try the df command instead of du.

Thanks for the hospitality,
It seems I have the space available, but I can't download the tarball.
After about 88 MB
it says {no space left on device}
what gives?
I've been stumped for hours.

I guess I was a little bit vague with my first suggestion.

If you do this from a LiveCD
Code:
# df -hT

It will show you what filesystems are mounted (there should be quite a few).

The important one to look for will have "/mnt/gentoo" in the far right column titled "Mounted on".
This is the partition that will be the root of your Gentoo installation (you want at least 2GB available here).

Is your partition mounted at /mnt/gentoo?
