|
|
Hello
This time I'm trying install Gentoo on compaq evo n620c laptop. Everything go right until unpacking downloaded stage file. I use stage3 file and checked md5sum is ok. I'm unzipping stage file as it was wrote in handbook by command tar xvjpf stage3... and unzipping stops while extracting. I tried few times on reiserfs and ext3 file systems and it always stops in diffrent point (each time it unpack diffrent count of files before it stopes). Where's the problem ? The "tar" program fails ?

Is it possible you are extracting the tarball into / (namely, the memory of your computer) and not /mnt/gentoo ? _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

What do you mean with "it stops"? Does the command stop and give you back a prompt? Does the command just sit there idling? Can you switch terminals? _________________ Please add "[solved]" to the initial topic title when it is solved. |

Tar is extracting files and during extraction stops everything - I even can't change terminal. There aren't any prompts when it happens. Truely, like mark_alec suggested, it looks like it could extract files to RAM and stop everything when RAM is full, but I can see created folders and files after reboot on mounted drive. I will add that I set swap to about 260 MB - I hoped it's enouth - and my swap is in extended partition area. May swap settings make that problems ? _________________ Live and let live - only together we can make big things. |

Probably not, but it seems a bit small. One thumb rule for swap partition size is double the size of your RAM. How much RAM do you have?

The rule of swap = 2*RAM only applies for low memory systems. From the moment you have 512 Mbyte or more it isn't that interesting to have a large swap (unless you're going to hibernate).
Perhaps you can boot the LiveCD with the noacpi option? It's a raw guess, but it does seem to help out in freeze-situations. _________________ Please add "[solved]" to the initial topic title when it is solved. |

I have 256 installed RAM, so with rule I get up swap to 560MB - unfortunatelly it didn't help. After that I used noapic without results, then I tried
with noapic nolapic nodmraid noscsi nox and it didn't freeze.
I think it's solved. Thanks for option noapic suggestion
