I haven't started mysqld for a while, I installed it for mythtv, had a play, then wanted to demo it tonight to a friend. Since it last worked I know there have been a number of updates in portage, although precisely what is not easy to say :-(

Anyway mysqld will not start. /var/log/mysql/mysqld.err tells me

Code:
030928 22:55:19  mysqld started
/usr/sbin/mysqld: error while loading shared libraries: libwrap.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
030928 22:55:19  mysqld ended

ldd /usr/sbin/mysqld confirms that mysqld is linked to libwrap.so.0 and that the lib cannot be found.

There is no file called libwrap.so.0 on my system. there is a libwrap.a but that doesn't seem to have anything to do with it. I naievely tried linking libwrap.a to libwrap.so.0 but that only gave a different error message

Code:
/usr/sbin/mysqld: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libwrap.so.0: invalid ELF header

any ideas what is going on?

thanks.

This is a common problem.

In sys-apps/tcp-wrappers-7.6-r4, the .so file is missing. Either re-emerge mysql or emerge =sys-apps/tcp-wrappers-7.6-r3.

Better do the first.

I wonder if this might be related and an easier option than reemerging msyql?

Only if you have gnome, methinks? orbit and oaf just for silly libwrap.so? :?

nickrout: btw, if you dont use tcp-wrappers, just unset the tcpd-use-flag.
