I was thinking of trying out
So i would like to know the advantages the one has over the other and which do you think is better and would help reduce boot up time.
Thanks |

That's a pretty old article and why it explains the theories behind init-bg and upstart, I don't think it answers the original question.
If you were judging based upon the products out today, what would be the advantages of init-ng, upstart and einit?
Are there benchmarks showing all three? _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

I would say baselayout-2!!!
won't need to mess with any of yr present config files (well ok there are a couple of special cases... LVM's and such). _________________

and it can seriously, I can have the regular sys V init installed in parallel with these so if some thing goes wrong at least.
So basically y question still remains unanswered |

I tried initng loooong time ago. So i'm not really in position to talk about it.
I've been playing with einit lately. Einit is fast, very fast. I've brought down startup times on pII a lot. From a few mins to cca half a min.
I don't know about baseleayout-2 but afaik einit (if baselayout-2 is installed) can work with sysvinit's config files, too. So no config files editing is required.
Einit is definitely worth a try!
I hope this answers your question, at least partialy. _________________ Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

Your original post inspired me to try out initng, which sounded fast. It is, but requires a lot of work to set up some services.

If that's true, I would recommend enint, even though I haven't tried it, because messing with 2 sets of init scripts/files is a huge PITA. _________________ Configuring a Firewall? Try my iptables configuration

I have tried to use initng myself sometime ago but couldn't get it work properly for me
And as for einit with baselayout-2 is not a great idea at this moment 'coz from what i know its in alpha stages. |

It's in heavy development. Version 0.6.7 is working well for me; i'm using it on one host that is rather unimportant and isn't running any services. It was easy to setup with the gentoo-wiki article. _________________ Configuring a Firewall? Try my iptables configuration
