Hi,

I have a problem with a Windows XP client in
Code:
emerge -pv virtualbox-bin

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] app-emulation/virtualbox-bin-2.2.4  USE="additions chm -headless -sdk -vboxwebsrv" 44,399 kB

on an amd64 host system.

each time I try copying large files - to network drive, virtualbox shared folder or passthrough usb drive - the copy dies quite early. I ripped a dvd as a test - no problem.

So my question is: Does virtualbox have a limit for files of 2 or 4 GB size?

Thanks,

fangorn

There seems to be a deeper problem.

Now I can't even copy a DVD before it stops the Windows XP client. So it is not related at all to the filesize copied!

I am new to virtualbox. Is it normal that it kills Clients without a visible reason?

OK.

I found the known bug with NAT networking. Will try if bridged networking is more stable. Will report back.

I now tried the new internal bridge feature of Virtualbox and an external bridge. I tested both local and bridged in Virtualbox, but all crashes the client at heavy load on shared folders.

Here is the dying message of the last try.
Code:

So far I am not thrilled. Disk performance is good, but it did not finish one lousy job.

Ths may be partially due to a windows XP bug. I had that happen on a hardware XP machine. Seems to happen more often if your destination is a network share or samba.

I believe in explorer you do not get the error message but the copy fails.

I doubt that this is the problem. I used a similar installation of Windows XP in a vmware player before and did the exact same tasks. I never had the problem with the client OS crashing out of the blue. I btw could not change anything as I don't have the source code of the writing apps.

Also the client now also crashes when massdownloading content from the usenet and writing to a shared directory. Filesize < 1 MB!

You are talking about a BSOD or just the operation failing?

In either case I think I am wasting your time. Sorry.

I have not seen this with XPSP3 under virtualbox however I have not done a lot of network transfers to / from the XP guest.
