Hello,

trying to install Gentoo on my new box*, I end up waiting a few minutes at "detecting ata_piix" before I reset the whole thing. I have tried this a couple of times, but the results were the same. I have been using Gentoo for about 8 months (on an older box), but honestly have no idea where to begin on this problem.

* Rough configuration:
Abit AB9 Pro Motherboard (Intel P965 / ICH8R Chipset)
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 2.4 GHz
2 GiB RAM
SATA Hard drive (on which I want to install)
SATA DVD-RW drive (which I use for booting)
IDE Hard drive (backup and such, I plan on keeping it after restoring documents)

EDIT: After taking forever (read: 10+ minutes) on "Scanning for ata_piix", the process finally resumes (it loads ata_piix), but finds no device to boot from. It only detects a device it calls hde, which I believe is the IDE hard drive. Has anyone faced a similar issue?

Thanks,
-Vlad

I first tried disconnecting my IDE drive, thinking that there was a problem with having both IDE and SATA on the same box. That didn't work, but I left the drive disconnected out of laziness.

Then, after much googling around, I tried "acpi=off" in the boot options and all went well. I haven't tried installing or connecting the IDE drive back, but I'm happy it works. I will plug the IDE drive back in after I install Gentoo. Hopefully this will not be a problem. If someone has faced this problem, please let me know.

-Vlad
