I am attempting to use this ebuild but get the following:

emerge google-desktop
Calculating dependencies -!!! Manifest file not found: '/usr/portage/app-misc/google-desktop/Manifest'

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "google-desktop" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- app-misc/google-desktop-1.0.1.0060 (masked by: corruption)

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

I have this in my package.keywords:
=app-misc/google-desktop-1.0.1.0060 ~x86

I'm having the same issue. How did you resolve this?

You need to put it in the right directory into your own overlay, and the do "ebuild <ebuildfile.ebuild> manifest" before trying to emerge the ebuild.

If you don't know what I mean, read the gentoo documentation. Search for "using 3rd party ebuilds".

Yup. Found that on the Gentoo Wiki site - I hadn't done the manifest building. Worked fine after that but the plugins still needed to be installed manually just like in one of the earlier posts.

Yeah right!

I'm not 100% hardline about using only OSS but installing this sort of thing is madness.

You give carte blanche to google to see everything your user can read on your system. Infact indexing that info is part of what they are offering. Do you really think this info will go no further.

Wake up people ! 8O

Yeah sure. Do you have any other links to closed source trojans I can install and then "turn off".

My point is that people seem to install this kind of crap without the slightest thought to what the implications are and having just clicked "I agree" before the screen has even finished rendering the licence terms.

I have yet to meet one person who has read what google TELL YOU they will to with the contents of you email and personal contacts when you sign up for Gmail. They are generally a bit shocked when I inform them about what they did not read.

In fact, the vast majority of people install not only "this" kind of crap, but any "other" kind of crap, too - not only without giving it a second thought but also without giving it any thought at all. They also don't just not finish reading the EULAs, in fact they don't even start doing so.

Good news.

I just wonder - why does Google make some of their projects using Qt and other using Gtk?

Waiting for ebuilds :)

I believe that Google's teams are free to use whatever libraries they want, so which they use goes according to each team's personal preference.
