just guessing, but have you installed the xeffects overlay? _________________ .... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth

I've managed to get compiz-fusion working.
System: AthlonXP (32bit), ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (fglrx 8.40.4), xgl-0.0.1_pre20070105, xeffects overlay
/usr/local/bin/startxgl, modified startx, changed line: xinit ... X ... -deferglyphs 16 to:
Code: |
xinit $clientargs -- /usr/bin/Xgl -accel xv:pbo -accel glx:pbuffer $serverargs -deferglyphs 16 &
|
~/.xinitrc
Code: |
export KDEWM="compiz-fusion"
exec startkde
|
/usr/local/bin/compiz-fusion
Code: |
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/libGL.so compiz --replace ccp &
emerald --replace &
|
Composite extension enabled; eselect opengl set ati enabled
I've followed many howto's and tried different approaches, so there is my findings:
- xgl and compiz-fusion howto's on gentoo-wiki is largely outdated
- Compiling libX11 with xcb is unnecessary
- adding dbus-launch to kde is unnecessary
- recompiling with opengl set to x11 or ati made no difference
Basically after some unsuccessful attempts I've unmerged compiz, emerald, plugins, etc which compiz-fusion pulls as dependencies, remerged xgl, and compiz-fusion again with just: emerge -av compiz-fusion. Important point is that I've deleted old compiz settings and old session files from kde profile dir. Before that I've had many issues with kdesktop crashes, wrong transparency, black/white screen etc. Started a new with above scripts.
Some issues are left: screensaver window is offset from topleft corner, computer locks (only bank screen and cursor, kb and mouse not work) when X shutdowns.
I hope this'll help someone. |

If effects (cube, wobbly windows) are here, but no window decorations, try to run Code: | DISPLAY=:0 emerald --replace | from console. |

Wow. Something compiled in a wrong way. Try kde-window-decorator or gtk-window-decorator instead of emerald if you have them. Maybe you have broken linker dependencies, try also revdep-rebuild. |

I've had working compiz fusion until I emerged fusion-icon yesterday. Now everything except mouse pointer freeze when kde loads wm. I have already unmerged fusion-icon, recompiled everything, but it still freezes... |

I just installed the git-version of compiz-fusion and as always everything worked fine. (I'm still waiting for the Big Crash, since
everything i install always works perfectly and that just can't be true)
But... with Beryl I could flip the cube with my middle mouse button. However, with compiz-fusion, this doesn't work and I can't figure
out how to get it to work. Is there anyone who can help me with this?
btw: I'm using gnome
thanks,

at least that's easy - turn on "Viewport mouse switch" in

I followed the instructions here:
http://wiki.gentoo-xeffects.org/Compiz_Fusion#Gnome_Users
When I start Gnome I have no window decorations. When I type in a console 'compiz-fusion' (NOTE: created at the section for KDE) it starts, but with 'compiz' it doesn't. I have the cube and all but no window decorator. I need to type 'gtk-window-decorator' in a console to start it. When I set abovementioned 'compiz-fusion' as the WINDOW_MANAGER compiz starts with the cube and effects but again no window decorator. In addition it doesn't render any wallpaper.
Suggestions? |

I have solved my problem by deleting ~/kde/share/config/compizrc. It seems that negative plugin was the problem, because in moment when that plugin should be loaded freeze would happen.
Btw. is there any solution for panel tray icons (like superkaramba, klaptopdaemon icon) disappearing?
@thomasvk In settings for window decoration plugin there is a field where you can type command for decorator you want to use. i.e. i typed emerald.
EDIT
Found solution for tray icons. I am not using compiz-start to start compiz any more, but fusion-icon, and I am strating it from ~/.kde/Autostart. This could be also solution for you thomasvk.

One need to start emerald to get window decoration, right? Then this is missing in the start script on the xeffects wiki. It is locked. _________________ Gentoo on Intel Core Duo 2 E6750, Gigabyte P35-DS3P, NVIDIA 8800GTS (amd64) |

You don't need to start emerald, you can also start any other window decorator. and you don't have to start emerald from the start scrip as i mentioned above.
btw my problem with tray icons still persist, but now they don't disappear each time. |

Thanks for your suggestion, deno. This indeed works and when Gnome starts I get a nice Window Decorator now. I used the command 'gtk-window-decorator' instead of 'emerald'. I don't know what the difference is, but it works.
The problem of the wallpaper still remains. When Gnome starts the splash screen remains as 'wallpaper' with a black background. When I go to the Desktop Background dialog the wallpaper suddenly does appear.
Edit:
Additionally, I noticed that windows do not have shadows in Gnome. The settings are correct and in KDE shadows are rendered.
Edit2:
Maybe I should look a bit better before making a post. gtk-window-decorator is quite plain and doesn't have any themes I think. Emerald has theming and has more features. Also, 'emerald' does show shadows. My current problem, my panel shows a shadow too. |

I have this error when I try to run fusion-icon
Code: | * Detected Session: gnome

I tried to do switch back to python 2.4, and back again to 2.5, using python-updater each time... and I also tried to do emerge -e fusion-icon... but nothing..
I don't have this error if I launch fusion-icon with "-n" option, so that it doesn't try to start compiz... but compiz works if I do compiz-start!!
solutions?
SOLVED!!! For some strange reason when I did an "emerge --depclean" after a general upgrade my system deleted sys-process/psmisc that is not listed in the system package, and is not required as a dependency by any package I re-emerged that and now it works _________________ Chi rinuncia ai sogni, è destinato a morire

Ok there is something really wrong i think
Code: | $ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/
DISPLAY=:0 compiz --replace ccp --sm-disable & |
Code: | $ compiz (core) - Fatal: No GLXFBConfig for
default depth, this isn't going to work.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0 |
Is there a easy way to remove the whole compiz thing? |

Thank you,
but compitz doesn't want to start. Now i get that:
Code: | $ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ DISPLAY=:0 compiz gconf
compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0
|
I'm using xfce4 if that is important. |

I got compiz to work by using the following command.
Code: | compiz --replace ccp --sm-disable |
but if that doesn't work, i used this as well.
Code: | compiz --replace ccp & gtk-window-decorator --replace & |
and it works just the same for me. Except now i get an error after running that. it states...
Code: | NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (Permission denied).
NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering. |
Anyone know if this is good, bad, or if i should just ignore it. heh. |
