you really do need to get gentoo to find usb in the steps because the alcatel is one if not only the main brand supplied by UK Broadband isp's
and i know alot of ppl haveing trouble setting their modem up in all distro's of linux not only this one...so gentoo can be the first to offer it eh?? heh |

Can you explain this a little more?

That would be because driver support under Linux can be flaky at times, especially if the vendor is not cooperative. |

well do get the packages for gentoo you gotta be connected to the net right??...and durring the steps...does gentoo detect the usb modem or not and if not...it needs to i havent tried yet but my guess is that is doesnt detect it like the other linux distro's.
steps = installation before you need to d/l the packages |

If you're asking for hardware auto-detection to be built into Gentoo, then no, it doesn't do that and no, it shouldn't do that.
As I posted in the other forum, search google:

1. Autodetection tends to break things
2. Autodetection is platform-specific (Gentoo runs on Sparc and PPC, too)
3. Autodetection requires a large inventory of hardware to compare probes with
4. Autodetection slows down things like booting
5. Autodetection is not always accurate (and can cause malfunctions)
...the list goes on. |

ok ok i knew i would get some smart a$$ reply to that lol
but gezz...ok maybe not auto detection but there must be a pretty simple way to do it...i am wanting to use gentoo right now but i need a way to hook the modem up for the package download :/
and since a net connection is soooo important to get the packages + installation (i hear gentoo takes a while to install and set up properly anyhow) what is an extra 10 or 20 secs of our time to auto detect some modem??? |

That wasn't some "smart a$$ reply", that was just a handful of reasons why autodetection simply will not work in this situation.

Yeah, grab the source for the kernel module (plus PPPoE), put 'em on a floppy disk or something, boot the install CD, compile, and modprobe or insmod as necessary. That's as simple as Gentoo is going to make it for you.

1. Because on many systems poking around looking for hardware can cause problems, i.e. hard reboots for no apparent reason, and so forth.
2. Because then the x86 Gentoo installer could not be easily built parallel to the Sparc and PPC installers
3. Because manufacturer and device IDs would have to be included on the install CD, which would increase the base ramdisk size, which would bump up minimum requirements and slow down compiles
4. Because the other 99.7% of the Gentoo user base doesn't have one of these modems so there's no point in poking around for it
5. Because some of the other 99.7% of Gentoo machines might incorrectly report hardware, causing unpredictable behavior (i.e. crashes/reboots)
...the list goes on. |
