KDE3.5 no sound

  • Quote

Post by Hal-61 » Tue Jun 05, 2007 7:22 am

Hi all,

I've just installed Gentoo, i had lots of problems on the way probbably because it was almost twee years since the last time i've worked with Linux  . The problem is, i don't get any sound from the KDE applications. When i start from the KDE desktop a non kde application (ex. rt2) i can hear a perfect sound...
I had also a problem with kmix, the lay out wasn't showing the channels of the soundcard (SB audigy). After re-emerging kdemultimedia this problem was solved. Last night i re-emerged kdebase (you never know) but this didn't solve anything.

tnx

If you don't like arts (or to test sound) you could use another playback program. I for example use mplayer.

Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> System Notifications -> Player Settings -> Use an external player

Go inside kmix and check for to unmute your channels.

When i select the sound system i've get this error :

" Unable to start the sound server to retrieve possible sound I/O methods.
Only automatic detection will be available."

=> The soundsystem doesn't start. (probably the problem but why?? :( )

When i use a non kde application the sound works fine (xine) and kmix is doing its job, there is even a syncronisation between alsamixer and kmix

I just went through the same thing, I had to reinstall kde with alsa arts vorbis enabled in the USE flags.
Frustration leads to knowledge.

I have a bad feeling that this could be correct, last night i emerged kdemultimedia-arts (tnx vasy) to do this i needed also to re-emerge kdelibs with "arts" flag enabled in USE (and bels start ringing), some things where working now, but still no sound from kde (soundserver starts now).

ronvenema, did you unmerge kde before you re-emerged it ?? think this would be the"cleanest" way to do it.

I also found out that you can't unmerge kde-meta sooooo, I ended up doing a complete new install using the individual kde packages but this time I had the correct USE flags set and the sound works correctly. I think I'm going to change my motto to "Gentoo, it's an adventure!"

I've unmerge the KDE packages manualy, remerge KDE and guess what... still the same problem :( ...
Even things that where working before doesn't work anymore now...
I give it another shot today, with a fresh install as ronvenema did, probably the problems started here with a bad configured kernel, kde dit some settings that i guess still interfere.

I can't recall that the last install of Gentoo i did was this difficult (on the same PC 18 months ago) , but anyway this is fun, if i would choose the easy way i can use a number of liveCD's like Ubuntu or Suse and set up a fine system in no time but this lacks the "Gentoo feeling", gives just more satisfaction. May be i should make this my motto...

Just before i planned to hit the Enter key to deïnstall KDE, i found something posted from miketones : :?
"emerge --newuse --deep --ask world"

So nothing to loose, i tried this and guess, seven hours later there was a nice tune playing when i started kde.
I've noticed that only kdeutils was re-emerged (probably i forgot to re-emerge this one last night) all other files where libs, xorg, and others....
So i can agree with miketones "alsa, arts and vorbis" are really necesary in the USE var when you set up Gentoo.
Learned a lot from Gentoo last week

Thanks to you all for helping me with this...problem solved (i think :D )

I'm having same problem/error. I had alsa and vorbis enabled in '/etc/make.conf' and sound configured in kernel with sound working except in KDE. I changed '-arts' to 'arts' and then ran 'emerge -uavDN world' [which I'd just finished yesterday with only one failure 'qt'] and it is emerging 249 packages mostly KDE and some other audio packages like MPlayer. Will see what happens.

Edit: One can also enable some other sound player in KDE I currently have '/usr/bin/mplayer' in 'Settings>Sound & Multimedia>System Notifications>Player Settings>Use an external player'.

Oh yes you can. Just do an unmerge and then depclean like this:

EXAMPLE: (DON NOT TRY THIS)

Code: Select all

emerge -C kdebase-meta
emerge --depclean
