Hi there

that's what I get if i try to emerge gcc... well, in reality I was trying to emerge -avDN quanta, but it blocked at gcc compilation as follows:

Quote:

-Wmissing-format-attribute -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.1.2/work/gcc-4.1.2/gcc -I/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.1.2/work/gcc-4.1.2/gcc/. -I/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.1.2/work/gcc-4.1.2/gcc/../include -I/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.1.2/work/gcc-4.1.2/gcc/../libcpp/include /var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.1.2/work/gcc-4.1.2/gcc/regclass.c -o regclass.o

with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <URL:https://bugs.gentoo.org/> for instructions.
The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem.

The complete log stack doens't say more than this.. which says "The bug is not reproducible, so it is likely a hardware or OS problem." so I don't really understand what I can do...

Please help...

Now I've put gcc =4.1.2 in my package.mask, hoping that gcc 4.1.1-r3 will work...

Anyway I'd like to know if i'm the only one with this problem and if you can help me to solve fur future (upgrading) purposes...

Thank you

Here my emerge --info:

what dont you understand? Start looking for the hardware problem.

make sure your CPU is not overheating , blow fluff out of you system , run memtest86 (install it or run just about any linux distro CD and check the boot options , it's usually there).

It almost always heavy compiler jobs like this that show up a hardware problem.

try emerge kdelibs and I'll bet the same thing happens.

thanks for your answer.

now that you point me out the hardware problems... i had some issues in the past and in the past i runned memtest to see if it was a ram problem, memtest didn't find any bad ram blocks...

i solved these old problems by replacing the power supply and the cpu cooler (I put a zalman, very powerful and silent).

if i emerge all other apps I have no problems... also re-emerging gcc, older version : 4.1.1 it didn't hang, emerging kdelibs 3.5.7 didn't give problems...

so im quite sure it's not a hardware problem...

anyway, i masked gcc 4.1.2 and im quite happy now, even if it's not really a "solved" problem.

gcc-4.2 has recently gone stable upstream (not sure if gentoo has it marked stable yet). You may like to try that since 4.1.x produces some of the slowest code of any gcc release in a long time.

There's a thread in "unsupported" forum but all looks good on most platforms now.

Same problem here but other solution:

By doing multiple time :
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-4.1.2.ebuild compile

folowed by :
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-4.1.2.ebuild install
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-4.1.2.ebuild qmerge

gcc has compiled after many seg faults.
Probably an hardware pb, but i'v no time to investigate.
