Hi there,

I just wanted to announce the availability of "small-gentoo X" (for x86), "small gentoo"'s 10th release

for a mirrorlist - please scroll down to the end of this first post

this should make installation for you guys/girls using sis, marvell, nvidia & other sata-controllers easier (2.6.21-based)

this CD offers some goodies such as a GUI & beryl (only for nvidia-users, unless you get
Code:
eselect opengl set ati
to work with a ro fs :roll: , didn't got it to work)

openoffice-bin, opera, realplayer, flash, mplayer + mplayerplug-in, firefox, grsync, kpdf (in /usr/kde/3.5/bin/), dev-util/git, cvs, subversion, mercurial

these should help you getting up your system pretty soon and/or recovering from disaster, (so it does help me with openoffice & printing), it also supports a wide printer-support via gimp-print alias gutenprint & foomatic

further it supports dvdisaster which should help you getting data off from damaged CDs/DVDs

the rest should be already known:

Quote:
Welcome to the 10th release of "small gentoo" for x86!
an extended GNU/Gentoo install-CD (with JMicron & Attansic network support)

featurelist:
* based on gentoo 2007.0+ with gcc 4.1.2, glibc 2.5, linux-headers 2.6.21
* kernel 2.6.21-kamikaze3 [+powertop patches] (kernel & initrd method by genkernel)
* reiser4-support (reiser4progs 1.0.6); reiserfsprogs 3.6.19
* ntfs-write & vfat-support (ntfs3g, ntfsprogs, dosfstools)
* hddtemp, smartmontools, ide-smart, hdparm, sdparm
* communication (links, irssi, ysm, licq); ntp; graphical links (e.g. links -g www.google.com)
* mc with 7zip-support; partimage
* testdisk & photorec with reiserfs-support (+ many more), parted, chntpw; for all your emergency needs
* mdadm, raidtools, device-mapper, evms2, lvm2
* bmon, htop, chkrootkit, rkhunter, johntheripper, paxctl
* rp-pppoe / ppp with atm-support, pppconfig, atm-drivers in kernel
* rovclock (underclocking of ATI mobility cards)
* wireless-config, wpa_supplicant (+ some wlan-drivers), ndiswrapper (experimental), pcmcia-support [exp.]
* mplayer (no video-support)
* smb (cifs) & nfs-support
* iptables-support, mirrorselect
* rpm2targz, deb2targz; vixie-cron; lm_sensors [experimental]
* fuse (thus ntfs-3g), no guarantee, that it's working, though
* subversion, cvs, mercurial, dev-util/git

* to start, open handbook-x86.html under /mnt/cdrom
-> links -g /mnt/cdrom/handbook-x86.html
-> links /mnt/cdrom/handbook-x86.html

* for ntfs write-support load fuse via
- modprobe fuse, then start ntfs3g:
- ntfs-3g /dev/... /mnt/windows

* for a list of kernel-modules type: modprobe -l
- under kernel/drivers/net you'll find the network-drivers

* for ndiswrapper, type in ndiswrapper
- to install a wlan driver, type in ndiswrapper -i driver.inf

known issues:
* printing via kpdf & cups doesn't work -> use pdf-print function & print via evince
* remove /var/cache & create /var/cache/cups 'mkdir -p /var/cache/cups && /etc/init.d/cupsd'

HAVE A NICE DAY ;) !!

normally I wanted it to be based on 2.6.22-rc3 so that you with the most-bleeding edge hardware have benefit from it, but loop support & other stuff unfortunately is broken on that release (as usual it happens with pre-release kernels ...)

so it features 2.6.21-kamikaze3 - kudos to waninkoko!
with powertop-patches from intel & cfs v14 patch (all included on the cd); you only have to download kernel 2.6.21 and use those patches against it

Welcome to small-gentoo_x86

root password is set to 'root' (changeme!)

for release info see /release.txt; /mnt/cdrom/release.txt

2 xorg.conf samples are in /mnt/cdrom/xorg/:
      1 for mobility radeon x600, 1 for nvidia geforce 7600GT

passwd for 'user' is user

for root access - type: sudo su

check out the graphical stuff ;) !

X for user currently is broken - so become root & startx

for enhanced security start firefox & stuff via gksu

for rw filesystem on root create a bash-script in /root/

and put in the following:

Code:
mkdir /tmpfs

mount -t tmpfs tmpfs -o size=1000000000 /tmpfs

mkdir /union

mount -t unionfs -o dirs=/tmpfs:/=ro none /union

mount --bind /union /

mkdir -p /tmpfs/home/user

mount --bind /tmpfs/home /home

chown user:users /tmpfs/home/user

(not verified), then execute it, this should give you support for additional - more advanced operations ...

here the temporary mirrorlist (still incomplete):

Great work KernelofTruth!! Thanks a lot!

Just a question; Did you drop ext4 support from the kernel?? Or is it the new e2fsprogs (1.40) that don't have ext4 patches??

Alright! Trying it out and using it well. Thanks a lot for:

Reiser4 support: I always seem to find the right CD, and then a lack of FS support on it.
X server: Yesss!! With all the time spent on my main computer compiling, i'm glad somebody recognized the need to go beyond links text browsing.
Xchat: Enough said.
i8k kernel module: I run into a compiler error every now and then while I'm away. It's mostly because these Dell laptops won't turn on their fans. Now I have fan control from within my chroot'd system.
Nvidia support: When I'm not using Beryl, it helps that my CPU isn't crunching on graphics.
Beryl: Sometimes I feel like I'm dumb for eye candy, and then I feel smart again when I have my windows organized over multiple desktops (shh ;o).
Ntfs-3g: Seems to work okay. Allows me to look up the keys to my wireless network.
Wpa-supplicant: Allows me to use the keys for my wireless network.
CD: Didn't have to go out and buy DVD-Rs. Or wait three days for it to download.

The worst problem is that I have to move that xorg config file to the right place. Boo hoo :roll:. I'm loving this CD.

Why doesn't it work with unionfs? What's the layout you use? Where do you mount stuff?

As always, KoT, your work is very much appreciated. Even with 2.6.18 kernels with jmicron support near ubiquitous now, I still tend to use your CDs.

Cheers.

thanks, bubbl07 :D

for simplicity's sake I use genkernel & it's great hardware detection features, I several times also tried out your livecd guide + initrd & tried to modify genkernel's init-script but it unfortunately didn't work :( (it's mainly a problem with limited time so I chose the way with less work :roll: )

update1:

updated xdeltas will follow soon (I needed working ati-drivers -> with this release they aren't working, so I downgraded ati-drivers :evil: & added some more stuff + updated to gnome 2.18 )

the xdeltas were made with xdelta-1.1.3

you should really be doing "eselect opengl set ati --dst-prefix=/etc/opengl" to make it work with read only mount (/usr is a link to /mnt/livecd/usr).

unionfs is a mess in 2.6.21, and its not going into 2.6.22 either. So, we need to wait till 2.6.23 maybe. Keep patching kernel till then.

watch out :!:

I seem to have confused root with user password on some releases of that CD so if you try to log on to root or user

try out 'user' or 'root' as password :roll: :lol:

sorry to disappoint you, Kollin, but no new amd64-release is planned, for the time being, for the following reasons:

*) for the following next 2-3 months I have no access to my rig (abroad) I only have a 3,5 years old laptop with 32bits
*) not that much dedicated time anymore [pretty stressful study which really needs all of my time & passion :roll: ]
*) no need on my side for the livecd & an amd64-system
*) I only work with 32bit-systems for several reasons ...

thanks for your support & using it

Thank you for the answer.
I`ll get over it but it`s sad that another good live cd is going in oblivion :(
I hope that someday you`ll com back at amd64 arch :D

You need to be very careful distributing stuff with pre-compiled binary kernel modules like nvidia-drivers. I believe you're not actually allowed to do this, but I could be wrong.

Hi,

i'm trying to install on a MSI P35 Neo. Tried all three alternate kernels that come with small-gentoo_x86-X.iso, but they all fail with the same error as the Gentoo 2007.0 CD:
Code:
No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devies...

Any ideas?

It's attached to the only onboard IDE port on the motherboard. I don't have a SATA CD-ROM.
Maybe the day has come to revive my dusty SCSI equipment! :lol:

Yay that worked! I've used a SystemRescueCd and booted from a old SCSI-CDROM. Thanks goodness i didn't trash it at eBay. :)

So i have my new Gentoo running but i still miss my burner (IDE-DVD connected to the onboard IDE).

Code:
03:00.0 IDE interface: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Unknown device 6121 (rev b1)

Do you by chance know if this is supported by the latest kernel? I have 2.6.22-gentoo-r5. I've tried the below modules (and some others) but no one gave me a cdrom device.
Code:
CONFIG_SATA_MV=m
CONFIG_PATA_MARVELL=m

And last but not least - would a SATA-DVD make less trouble?

probably - I don't have the marvell chipset so I can't tell for sure:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux%2Fkernel%2Fgit%2Ftorvalds%2Flinux-2.6.git&a=search&h=HEAD&st=commit&s=marvell

latest commits are from the end of april - so there might not be much difference to 2.6.22

if your graphics card driver permits it, give mm-branch a try http://www.eu.kernel.org/patchtypes/mm.html

Looks like a great CD. Hope it will let me install Gentoo on my new desktop.

Though, I cannot figure out the root password. Neither 'root' nor 'user' works. :cry: :cry: :cry:

Moreover, I try to run fdisk and cannot find which letter corresponds to my hard drive. With SATA hard drives, I was looking for /dev/sda or /dev/sdaX if I remember well, but here there is only /dev/sda, and it will not mount (maybe due to the password thing).
Please, help... :cry: :cry: :cry:

Frankly, why to put a password on a LiveCD, to begin with ? This is really too frustrating: I finally find a CD that will boot the machine (kudos for that), but then it will not let me do anything with it for no reason.
