when i try to emerge gentoo-sources i get an error. i dont have the exact text anymore but it complains that ebuild.sh doesnt exist then says it cant remove /var/db/pkg/sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.2/portage-2.1.2.2.ebuild and that i should remove it manually if necessary.

just to see if that really matters i run emerge --resume and suddenly i get
bash: /usr/bin/emerge: no such file or directory

and i ls /usr/bin/em

it comes back with /usr/bin/emerge highlighted in red with white letters. when i ls -hal, i see that it points to /usr/lib/portage/bin/emerge which doesnt exist. the only thing in /usr/lib/portage/bin is another red and white file called donewins which points to newins, which doesnt exist.

so, i just tried to unpack the portage snapshot into usr again. it threw up:
tar: bzip2: cannot exec: no such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

so what... bzip2 is missing as well??

this the second time back to back this has happened. last time i went back to the beginning and started over.
there isnt anything interesting in dmesg.

oh, this might be noteworthy too: when i emerge gentoo-sources it says its already there and wants to rebuild it. so i tell it yes. then its all down hill from there.

what the hell happened!??!?

Have you checked the emerge log (/var/log/emerge.log)?

okay according to the log, it completes the emerge of gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r8 to /
the first problem the log shows is during cleanup:

!!! unmerge FAILURE: sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.2
*** terminating.

as part of the clean up it unmerges bzip2 (hmm), binutils, hdparm, openssh, findutils, and several others i havent checked yet, all of which seem to actually really be gone now!

Had you restored parts or most of the system from a backup prior to noticing these problems?

It sounds to me like your portage files have become skewed--and the way that I solved that problem for myself in the past was to remove /usr/portage/* and re-sync.

yes, and that looks like it worked.

additionally i had to format /var again to get rid of a phantom file. it was complaining that octave-vorge wasnt a real file. its permissions read "???????" owner group "? ?" and when i tried to delete it it wouldnt go anywhere.

but im mid emerge -newuse and things look happy.

thanks for the help!
