Hi,
I am fighting with Gentoo instalation few days, after emerging X11-xorg and kde-base I still cannot run desktop environment on my Toshiba Tecra 8100 notebook.
I think problem seems to be with graphics card driver, I tryed use "vesa" driver, than I dont have any error message, but desktop wont start anyway... I have S3 savage graphics card
Can anybody give some advice? I am not expert and I dont have any idea what to do now... :/
Thanks

here is my xorg.log and xorg.conf -

I am no expert but did you try to use xorgconfig (command line utility)? You have to get something when you type "startx", try "startkde". You need to get to a point where you have at least an error message. Try "lspci -v"

Maybe also read: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

Good luck.

I believe that you need to enable DRI in order for the savage driver to work.

I have tryed everything, Xorgconf, Xorgcfg, X -config with same result, startkde is not one of my system commands, only start_kdeinit with error KDE: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
But thanks for advice about DRI, I gonna try it now and let you know the result.

now I'm seeing that in DRI how to is notice -

This guide is for people who can't get direct rendering working with just Xorg. The DRM works for the following drivers:
* 3dfx
* i8x0
* matrox
* rage128
* radeon
* mach64
* sis300
* via

There is not savage driver on the list, so does it make a sence to try install it?

Thanks

Make sure you have VIDEO_CARDS="savage" in your /etc/make.conf, and emerge x11-drm.

Have you set XSESSION in /etc/rc.conf?

vitoriung,

I would recommend the 'in kernel' DRM support.

I had more problems with this instalation, so I decided to start from scratch and install gentoo again.
My house-mate adviced me to choose less options in kernel and make it more modular, we've chosen most options like his laptop has...so now I have new system with new kernel, and with more problems than before.. :)

1) after emerging xorg-x11, there is no chance to configure graphics environment with xorgcfg (before it was only thing that worked), all the time I have these error messages -

(EE) Unable to locate/open config file /root/xorg.conf.new
New driver is "savage"
(==)Using default built-in configuration (55 lines)
(EE) Failed to load module "savage" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "vga" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available

Fatal server error:
no screens found
Cannot connect to X server
.............................

Unfortunately I dont have any idea how to download modules and make them working, if you adviced me or give me some useful link for beginners I would be pleased.. :)

2) I tried to emerge x11-drm with this error-

!!! ERROR: x11-base/x11-drm failed
Call stack:
ebuild.sh, line 1631...
bla bla bla

!!! Please disable or modularize DRM in the kernel config. (CONFIG_DRM = n or m)....

In this case I should find and switch off or modularize DRM option in kernel and than recompile it again?

Thanks
V.

The x11-drm package is "DRM Kernel Modules for X11" so id imagine if you have compiled them in you dont need to install that package.

At a start, dont worry about starting from scratch, 99% of the time linux is fixable and its likely you will come back to the same problems. Only thing i can see that i have is in the Screen subsection you dont have default depth. May not be necessary tho.

also make sure u put the correct options in .xinitrc, its where startx looks for your window manager.
