USE="static" emerge e2fsprogs (1.40_pre20070411) DOESN'T produce static binaries
Is this intentional? It surely is unexpected behavior.

It also doesn't help to edit the ebuild of e2fsprogs and leave out the --enable-elf-shlibs line in src_compile, because the static sslibs are not there.

To really get a static binary (of blkid for an initrd, in my case), I had to
- compile ss statically with configure and make
- compile e2fsprogs statically with configure and make
