Hi,
I'm trying to install gentoo on a firend's pc. The gentoo 2007.0 livecd won't boot (nor Ubuntu v6.06 LTS).
I don't remember exactly the error. I'll try to explain what is happening.
The CD boot. I can see a message saying something like "cdrom drive command failed", iirc. Then I can see the (normal) "Loading modules" as shown on osdir: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/slideshow.php?release=811&slide=2
I then see "Activating mdev" and others until "Atempting to mount media..." (those steps seems a bit too long...)
And then it fails. It says it cannot find the cd to mount!
Booting Ubuntu stayed at "Mouting filesystem...".
The CDs are ok. I suspect some confusion in isolinux, kernel and initrd. Maybe the order of the CD and HD are getting swaped somewhere?
I opened the PC case to look at the config. I can see is 2 cables for HD connection and CD connection (ide? sata? pata? I'm a bit lost on this, which one is which one...)
Tomorrow I'll try the minimal cd, but I don't think it will work, since its in the early stage of booting...
Anyone having a clue on this one?
Thank you. |

I would try another cd-drive in that machine if possible.

ide and pata are the same thing, just normal hdd cables.
sata cables are much smaller. |

I hope to find something else... It's not my machine. But I think I've heard the cdrom already had problems.

I tryed another drive, bot it did the same.
I then checked the bios. I disabled SATA on the motherboard and it booted ok! (via pata) |
