Something else Ive noticed, if the screensaver is not allowed to go into powersave mode (no dpms) it doesnt have any problems coming back.

Ah? Interesting... I had indeed set up xscreensaver-demo and KDE Display component to use DPMS... Let's see if it helps.

Does this have anything to do with the error I get?
Code:
FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc/" refcount is 2, should be 1

What did you change?
I can't solve this problem. I hope somebody can...

I am 99% sure that this is NOT your problem, because I have this error every single time I run X.

I used to have X lockups. I don't remember how this problem fit in with my graphics card/PSU replacement that I did, but in any case, after re-installing Gentoo (because I trashed the partition by accident, grr) the lockups went away.

Not that I am not telling you to re-install Gentoo, that's just what I did.

I think that is why my new xorg.conf worked for a while, I don't use any screensaver but use the offtime option in the xorg.conf serverflags.

I commented out the following from my xorg.conf

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

X doesn't crash anymore. I will work in X for a little while longer and let you know if things change. Normally, X peaks the CPU within seconds of a session.

I work with my configuration for about two weeks and haven't any lockups yet.

So my suggestions worked for me. The errors in my Xorg.log are staying but these errors are only telling me that my graphics card doesn't support some functions.

@jmanko
I've read in some other forums that also kubuntu is affected by this problem. I didn't look for other distris but i think the main problem is within kde >= 3.5.6. But like other users tell that gnome or xfce also are affected i can't be really sure about the suggestion.

Even more interesting... What if you have DPMS enabled in xorg.conf, powersave enabled in xscreensaver-demo (for gtk-based environments) and in KDE display configuration? I think I should expect troubles but isn't there one of them which takes precedence?

I wonder if there is a Java/DRI connection here. I know that it's X eating CPU cycles, but I only recall having problems when I was using Java applications.

All they should do is the equivalent of 'xset dpms force off', the one with the shortest 'off time' would surely take precedence, the other two would just be issuing an off command to an allready inactive card.

Well, X froze on me again; this time, when I opened the Gnome theme manager.

This is killing me...

Ok, fine. I just wonder if xscreensaver-demo is actually running when KDE is active because when I run it manually it tells me the deamon doesn't run. I tend to believe it (we're not under Redmond's toy here, are we? ;-) ). So it looks like the common point to all WMs is xorg.conf DPMS settings. I can easily cope with that.

It turns out X is still eating up 100% CPU. I now am certain one or two Superkaramba applets are responsible for that "lock up". I've left my computer for almost one week with only one Superkaramba applet, LiquidWeather and X was in a normal state. I've had kinda lock ups always when Aero-G plus one dmesg monitor were active. I'm suspecting Aero-G applet is responsible for that disease.

Stay tuned...

Okay, Ive narrowed down lockups to the animations plugin in compiz-fusion, on three computers left running all day yesterday, without the animations plugin, they all came up immediately from screensaver, when I truned on animations all had some delay if they came back at all

Hi.. i'm with you :(

After updating my notebook (first update after 2 months) I have a freezing X from time to time (with 100%) but its still possible to move the cursor and to log in via ssh, but its not possible to kill the X (kilall -9 X) because that kills the whole machine 8O .

I think its a problem with the ati-drivers (i have an 9700 mobility)... i am using fluxbox. It didnt seem to freeze with 3d-hardware support deactivated but i didnt had the time to test it very long because i need the 3d-support.

Stupid...

I found the same, I had crystal clock and few borealis (??) monitors running, they made it go 99% and (effectively) lock.

I'm currently experiencing the joys of gkrellm, 'cos I used those system monitors more than I realized.

at least, i **think** i have disabled everything related to screen or energy saving in X and kde
(neither kscreensaver, xscreensaver nor DPMS options are enable in kde)
as for X, i think i haven't enable DPMS or *fancy* hardware options

and, obviously, i still get the 100% cpu activity issue
it seems to trigger upon inactivity (it just happened after 15 or 20 minutes)
if i'm patient and it has not been busy *too long*, X will, in time, respond again

i run a 2007.0 64 bits on core 2 with nvidia graphics(that's a brand new computer)
i also use a laptop (Dell D520, INTEL CORE DUO T2300E and intel graphics)
both are updated to latest stables of xorg and kde
i use superkaramba on both (that's my next move, try not to run it and see...)
and both have the issue (sorry guys, this is not nvidia's fault)

i used to run kde 3.5.5 on the laptop and never had this problem before
upgraded mid-august and then started the nightmare
the laptop is my work computer and i need to hard-kill X almost everytime i leave for more
that half an hour! I'll let you imagine how muc my windows colleagues love this situation...

kernel 2.6.22-gentoo-r5
Gentoo Base System release 1.12.9
xorg-x11-7.2 / xorg-server-1.2.0-r3
KDE: 3.5.7 / Qt: 3.3.8

here follow my config files in case it helps to narrow down the bug
i'd also be glad if i was told i was just plain stupid and i need to fix my conf
(in which case, please don't just call me stupid, provide the fix too ;))

David

I found the same, I had crystal clock and few borealis (??) monitors running, they made it go 99% and (effectively) lock.

I'm currently experiencing the joys of gkrellm, 'cos I used those system monitors more than I realized.

Maybe that's the way to go... At least I now know the culprit was Aero-G monitor for superkaramba. I had only three monitors active and had lockups. Now I only have my dmesg monitor and LiquidWeather  no lockup.

Reading your post it looks like there is not only one applet that causes lockup  ...

Well none of these correspond to my issues. My computer freezes play Doom3 (normal F5 for quick save), Kstars and googleearth

Things I've tried so far: New power supply, adding Chipset Fan, down grading nvidia drivers, upgraded nvidia drivers, down grading Xorg, upgraded Xorg and memtest86X testing ram.

I'm running:

Dual AMD Opteron 64
1Gb Kingston HyperX Ram
Tyan Tiger Mobo S2875
Sparkle 7600 nvidia

Are Radeon users have these problems?

Please, please, please: post only the relevant parts of your configuration and do *not* post comment lines!
example:
zegrep -v '^# CONFIG|^#[[:space:]]*$' /proc/config.gz

Very useful I'll have to as that somewhere.

I'm wondering what specific can I do to get more debug info. Where options are there for Xorg and the kernel or any other software which will yield useful info that can help sort my issues out and that might help others here??

I decided to list my loaded modules. If the problem is not xorg, gnome, etc, then what else can it be? A loaded module that shouldn't be? Some graphics library?

BTW, X has not crashed on me for a few days. It seems as though if things start out running without problems, then they stay that way. It's a coin toss upon boot, it seems.

+1 on the lockup issue :(

I was absent from linux for quite a while and decided to come back(left it behind last December I think). I did a fresh install of gentoo64, I have an asus mobo and an nvidia card. X froze for me using xfce4 after max 5 mins every time. I tired disabling renderaccel and AGP in xorg.conf, I disabled PCI-e overclocking in bios(someone suggested it could cause problems) and nothing helped... it did buy me more time(takes a few hours to freeze now.. I'm not really sure because it froze on me during the night... probably the screensaver issue).
I switched to the NV driver and that works just fine. This is not a suitable solution for me though, because I use a lot of blender which is opengl dependent.

Has anyone made any progress here? I haven't changed my system configuration in a while and I had gentoo running just fine about a month ago... so some recent update must be the cause of this... I'm back on windows until somebody can tell me how to fix this :D I didn't try the older nvidia-drivers unfortunately... I read here that it doesn't help? but after some more research it would seem that the drivers could be the problem for me at least.

and, obviously, i still get the 100% cpu activity issue
it seems to trigger upon inactivity (it just happened after 15 or 20 minutes)
if i'm patient and it has not been busy *too long*, X will, in time, respond again

After some more days and freezes I have to agree, it freezes after some time of inactivity (but not every time).
How do you hardkill X? Every time i want to kill my X via ssh my whole system
crashs ...
