|
|
I'm not sure if this is related to the fact that this is on a 64-bit installation or not, but I'll see.
When I access the disk, I get some slow reaction. DMA is enabled on both PATA drives, and the main system (/, /home) are on a SATA. I notice some disk slowness in Amarok (and other apps), but in Amarok it's really noticeable when I right-click a file and get file information (as an example). Also when saving a file in other applications, the dialogs are slow to respond (i.e. click 'OK' and the dialog freezes for a few seconds).
Some information I thought might be useful for diagnosing said problem:
Intel Core2Duo E6400
2 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS 256MB
Nvidia drivers are installed (I get the logo), but glxinfo | grep direct yields :
| Code: | bravo-gentoo ~ # glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: No
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

System has emul x86 libraries (I installed mozilla-firefox-bin, for example)
| make.conf wrote: | bravo-gentoo ~ # more /etc/make.conf

# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example.
CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
# This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing. You
# should probably be using a different stage, instead.
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
USE="opengl qt3 qt4 kde arts dvd dvdr cdr vorbis mp3 mpeg encode alsa X amarok ogg java flash"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org/ ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.
gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo "
SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" |
Any other information that might be helpful, please let me know.
I've done some searching but most disk access lag is attributed to DMA, and that's not the case here.
Thanks in advance! _________________ | Starmen.net

Seems to be alot of this going around lately with the newer kernels. You could try an older kernel such as 2.16.17 series if it will support your hardware, that partially solve this problem for me (by partially it drastically reduced the disk lag but not entirely).
Another person said their problem was due to the SATA controller being detected as PATA *shrug* a possibility I guess.
Alot of people have also had some success with changing to different schedulers instead of CFQ such as deadline, did not help in my case but could for you. |

No, I didn't see it until I came back to check on this one! Now I'm not sure how I missed it!
Thanks. _________________ | Starmen.net
