|
|
This is a puzzling one that i'm struggling to find a solution for,
I have an Asrock ALiveNF6G-DVI mobo, that works fine, everything worked on it ok, sound came out of the speakers. I decided to add a Hauppauge Nova-T to it to use as a media PC. Once As soon as the TV card was plugged in, the sound stopped working, as far as the machine is concerned the sound still works, and if I try to play with mplayer or any other player, it plays but no sound comes out of the speakers. If i feed something to the line in it comes out of the speakers correctly (upscaled to the 5.1 from stereo)
As soon as I remove the TV Card (without removing the driver modules from the kernel) the sound works correctly again

anything relevant in dmesg and/or /var/log/messages ? _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

I have linked the 2 dmesg outputs in the post, nothing relevant that I can see, which is why i'm asking.
About the only difference relating to the sound card is
#0: HDA NVidia at 0xdcff8000 irq 21 - With TV
to
#0: HDA NVidia at 0xdfff8000 irq 21 - Without TV
But that alone doesn't mean a lot to me. _________________ Tim

What about /var/log/messages ? Or whatever it is that you system logger uses. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

tried with another DVB-T card, (Compro DVB-T200) - sound works fine then, but I can't get all the channels (missing 2 multiplexes here in the UK - the 2 QAM64 ones) - that card works fine in Windows in another PC, so I assume the Linux drivers aren't great for it.
So, its something with the Hauppauge card, but I have no idea what.
[edit]
I have also tried the seperate alsa-driver package as well as that in the kernel

A diff of the 2 dmesgs - give me a few bits about interrupts and the TV Card drivers

Do you know which sound device its outputting to?
There was a post a few weeks back, where some guy's voice modem or something was being sent all the sound data instead of the soundcard - Disabling it fixed it for him IIRC |

I only have one sound output device
celery ~ # cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xdcff8000 irq 21
It is supposedly outputting to this device. _________________ Tim

Ok, I have a solution... remove the blanking plate from the TV Card
http://tim.igoe.me.uk/files/mediapc.jpg - is my media PC, the TV card is horizontal, the end of the blanking plate is touching against the sound output stack. Shorting it out.
Silly 'issue', and I don't know what made me try and remove the plate frm the TV card to fix it.
[edit]
Or not, a lucky boot that worked or something... its not done it again since i rebooted

back to trying to fix it... if i play an mp3 or something and watch /proc/interrupts I can see interrupts occuring on interrupt 21, the HDA Intel card. As soon as I kill mplayer they stop. _________________ Tim

a few hours later, and a test windows install complete... looks like its the hardware not behaving correctly. Exactly the same happens in Windows
Only with the WinTV Nova-T does the problem exist, I have tried other PCI cards and they all behave correctly. _________________ Tim
