As a first step, Intel is releasing the PowerTOP tool, a tool that will help you find out what software is preventing your laptop from having a really long operation time when running on battery.

Sounds very nice!
No download link yet (site just came online) but looking forward to test it (I already now that the ATI driver will be on top :) )

Download is available!

My output:
Code:
Cn          Avg residency (10s) Long term residency avg
C0 (cpu running)        ( 7.5%)
C1                0.0ms ( 0.0%)                   0.0ms
C2                4.2ms ( 2.7%)                   2.6ms
C3                5.7ms (89.8%)                   4.1ms

Wakeups-from-idle per second :  330.0
Power usage (ACPI estimate) :  26.0 W (0.8 hours left)

Top causes for wakeups:
  40.3%        <interrupt> : uhci_hcd:usb5, fglrx
   8.7%             gpomme : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
   7.6%      <kernel core> : usb_hcd_poll_rh_status (rh_timer_func)
   6.6%        <interrupt> : acpi
   6.3%      <kernel core> : ehci_work (ehci_watchdog)
   6.3%         acpi-power : cpufreq_governor_dbs (delayed_work_timer_fn)
   5.7%        <interrupt> : ide0
   4.0%              artsd : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
   3.2%             pommed : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)
   3.2%             dhcdbd : schedule_timeout (process_timeout)

Kopete and Amarok are very bad! Had to close them before.

Kopete seems to be fixed:
Quote:
The worst offenders are currently kopete (responsible for 40% of the wakeups on a Fedora test system) and HAL polling the CD-ROM drive every two seconds. Will Stephenson told me that kopete in KDE4 is fixed already, and that fixing the KDE3 version is on his radar.

Lets hope the will do the same for amarok!

And hopefully the No.1: ATI will fix this soon too (http://digg.com/linux_unix/Better_ATI_Linux_driver_to_come)

edit:
to fix amarok: disable keep database up to date
to fix kopete: edit the kopeterc and add 'SmoothScrolling=false' under the [ContactList] section!

Wohoo, this tool kicks ass :)

If you need an ebuild check out bug 178130. But I expect it to be in the tree very soon. 8)

Intel is teh r0XXorz. :D
Although I guess I don't really need that tool. I've got a nice 5 hours (when I'm working) on my centrino.
But it was still pretty FOSS friendly of Intel to come up with that.

Oh there is already a thread about it here :-)

Has anyone been able to get rid of this issue:

Code:
  25.3%        <interrupt> : i915@pci:0000:00:02.0

the intel website talks about a bug in the driver that already has been fixed so maybe its in cvs?
Im using xf86-video-i810 1.7 but its the same with 2.0.0

It has been fixed for 2D mode not for 3D mode. And if you are using dri/glx your card is in 3D mode.

Just loading the dri/glx modules puts the videocard into 3D mode??

Well, the wakeup calls disappeared after removing them, thanks :-)

Can't seem to access the site from here :( I hope it'll be back up soon, this thing looks really interesting (I hop I'll be able to regain some battery life on my 2yrs old centrino).

I wish there was an easy way to undervolt on linux though that didnt involve patching the kernel.

You can find PowerTop as sys-power/powertop in the official portage tree (~x86).

I got this.
Code:
No detailed statistics available; please enable the CONFIG_TIMER_STATS kernel option

I can't find the option in .config or in menuconfig. Where the hell is it. I was using suspend2-sources-2.6.19 but reverted to 2.6.18 because suspend wasn't working well with 2.6.19. I know they recommend 2.6.21+ for a tickless kernel but it's still ~x86. Does anyone know which kernel versions have this option?

It's under kernel hacking. It's a debug option.

Couldn't find CONFIG_TIMER_STATS, did find CONFIG_SCHEDSTATS I'm going to try it.

Kernel 2.6.21 works fine here (I'd recommend it to you anyway to gain additional battery time). I guess you'll find the option there (as I did just 1 sec ago). :)

CONFIG_TIMER_STATS is not available until kernel 2.6.21

I also think I read something like you have to use 2.6.21 to use powertop on their webpage.

kopete is silenced now. :D

-) When using my synaptics-touchpad, wakeups/sec rise from ~250 to ~650. The synaptics module seems to use an 'i8042'-driver, which is responsible for the peak.
-) Right now firefox-bin is responsible for over 50% of all wakeups.
