I think the Live Cd is using Swap partition if he can find it... so when you try to install, then the partitioning will not work because the swap partition is in use... I went around it just by doing
swapoff -a
Then the Partitioning worked...

But I never have seen it hang in the useraccount setp screen. On the other hand I never setup any user account during install. Did you use that screen to create any account or did it just stop there when you tried to get through?

I was not trying to do any partitioning. That partition table was already set up how I wanted from a previous linux install. The only thing that needed doing was a format of /dev/hda1

As for the user accounts, I had created one user account. I had hit the accept user button and the account details were moved to the area showing what users were setup. Neither the back button or next button would do anything. The buttons had the correct animation when they were pressed but that was all.

I had a lot more success using the livecd as a way to boot the system and manually prep the hd and start off with a stage3 tar ball. I really wish I had done this 14 hours ago instead of wasting so much time with the livecd.

:x Here's another issue similar to the backa nd next buttons not working. I start off with an empty hard drive with 5GB of unpartitioned space and I need to create thre paritions, I click on the unpartitioned space and nothing happens, the button animated but doesen't do anything, I want to custom partition my drive but the only way to get to the next installer stage is to click 'Recommended Layout' which is what I don't want. :x

I want to install Gentoo on an AMD64. When I try to install it with the GUI installer(2007.0), it hangs when it reaches 50/116.
Is there any solution to get work Gentoo on this machine? I have windows already installed and want a dual boot.

Is using the 2006.1 version a solution for this annoying problem?

My advice: screw the GUI installer, just use the minimal/universal disc and do the standard command-line install.

I'm still a noob with gentoo so it will be hard to do it with the command-line.
I tryed the 2006.1 version but it doesn't recognize my internet adsl connection.

maartenlambrecht,

Not installing using the command line robs you of a valuable learning experience. If you can follow this handbook its not too hard either.

Hints :-
1. Read the handbook from beginning to end.
2. Decide how you have to adapt its example partitions to your own install.
3. Print those pages of the manual, and change them, (or otherwise write down the mapping)
4. Install Gentoo

It will take more CPU time, as you will compile more for yourself.
Ask questions here or or irc.freenode.net #gentoo or #gentoo-uk.
Have exact handbook steps and error messages to hand. That information helps us to help you.

Thanks NeddySeagoon
I'm going to give it a try!
First I'll download the minimal cd and read the manual. Tomorrow I will do the install.
I don't have mirc any more so I will post my (future) questions in a topic on this site.
See you there!

If you have trouble with the adsl, just post here from another machine (or if you're planning on dual booting, get all the info and errors, and boot into the functional OS that's already on the system).

maartenlambrecht,

Provided you can get onto the internet, the liveCDs provide irssi, which is a console IRC client.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4172882.html#4172882
I hope you can find a sollution. I'm using the handbook for amd64 and I have a non-multi-lib configuration.

Why keep trying at all? Clearly, the GTK installer is unreliable. Therefore: Don't use it. It's not that hard to install using the minimal disc.

I have tried to install the newest Gentoo live cd release but, to my surprise, this release is riddled with serious bugs. I did check the MD5 sum of the downloaded image and it matches with the original. My previous experiences have been with 2006.0 and 2006.1; 2006.1 has been the best experience I had with Gentoo. 2007.0 seems to be the worst release yet.
I agree, 2007.0 isn't ready yet for the masses.

Another frustrating issue is with the new installer.
Sometimes, during the partition format the format dialog just doesn't close at all as soon as the partition creation step is done... clicking "ok" does not work but I have to click on "cancel" or the close button. After doing that, when I arrive at the mounting step, I click "Add", set the new drive partition to boot from, click "Update". After doing that I get the "the mounting of the partition could fail for any reason". I have to restart the installer and start from scratch.
I to have this problem.
The 2007.0 installer didn't work for my either, It did not work to install Gentoo with it.
So I will try 2006.1 instead and see if I have better luck with that one.

If I purchase a Gentoo cd/dvd disc, it should work ... But if it don't work, I feel that I have been roobed on my money for it.

I dont like whining on the developers of Gentoo (they do the best the can), but don't release a Gentoo version that is not working properly.
Don't release a version that is not tested.
And drop the GUI installer.
Gentoo users don't care about it anyway.
Do a good and solid commandline installer instead.
Gentoo, don't try to be like a GUI-dist like Fedora etc.
Gentoo is for experienced Linux users and all we want is a Gentoodist that is working without some hokuspokus-GUI/GTK.
Gentoo, please hear our voice. Listen to the people that is using you and don't be like others.

PM,

Do not confuse 200x.y installers with Gentoo. Gentoo does not have versions.
You do
Code:
emerge --sync
emerge world -uDNav
and you have todays gentoo.
My gentoo was installed with the 1.4-rc4 CD in early 2003 and its still up to date

Yes, I understand what you are saying.
But I mean the GTK/GUI-installer thing on the CD/DVD.
I'm a new gentoouser and I like when the Gentoo install process don't hangup and I can't get further in the installationprocess.
I tried to install with 2007.0 DVD and it didn't work.
It did work until I get to the partition thing, then the installation break and I couldn't get on with the installation and it had all ready done the partitoning thing, but the installer was breaking.
I have a slow 56kmodem connection and thats way I want to use the Gentoo DVD version, so I don't have to download much for it to work.

Is there a way to get around the gtk-installer fault, so I can install with the dvd-disc anyway ?

PM,

There is but its not easy. You need to know the names of all the packages you need, then you can use quickpkg to make the binaries from the DVD.
With the binaries, you can then use tar or later, emerge -K to install them. As I say, its hard work.

Do you have remote access to broadband ?
Its perfectly possible to download all the files you need somewhere else and move them yo your install with a USB Pen, or CD-ROM ...
That process is nicknamed Sneakernet

Isn't there binarys on the dvd ?
Isn't there a list on the dvd on the needed packages ?

OK, but to be blunt, that reply has nothing to do with you and what you have and have not paid for. I was trying to point out to billydv that maybe he should stop banging his head against that wall before he has a brain hemorrhage. Besides, even if he did pay for it, it's clearly not going to work for him, for whatever reason. So, again, why keep trying at all? It's pointless. Install with the minimal disc and try to get a refund.

PM,

The binaries on the DVD/CD are installed to make the CD/DVD work.
You have to do as the installer does and make the needed packages from whats installed.
Thats what quickpkg does. There are no binary tarballs just waiting for you.
