I installed 3.0.1 (And I have the same problem under Mandrake), whenever I try to start some KDE programs, it takes near FOREVER. If I run something like, say, Fluxbox and try to execute the prorgam it loads right up. What's delaying it so badly on my system?

check your /etc/hosts if it contains your ip-address (non-loopback).... some/most kde apps look up your ip and will get timeout...

ps: there was a thread here in the forum, dealing with this kind of problem

Did you use the search function? (hint, hint)
KDE is not alway quite as fast as one might like it to be, but "forever" seems a bit too much :) there is a tip in the Desktop Environent section about setting your hostname . My KDE konqueror in the role of file manager starts up in appx. one second.... and with a trick I have applied (having an invisable koqueror running all the time in the background) that is reduced to 0.3 sec. So I think you should do some searching in the forum and start with the /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts trick.
<EDIT>
Oops , jb was just a little quicker...
</EDIT>

That's fast indeed!
What system R U running KDE on? Just for comparison, I have a P3 500 and konqueror takes 4 secs to load :(

And how do you make konq. to run invisible?

gr.

I run it on a Duron 850 w 256MB ram, but I also got apx. 1.5-2 sec on a AMD K6 III, so it seems that your p3 is lightly underachieving.

Well my trick's not really elegant actually. First I set my Taskbar in look and feel to only show apps on my current desktop. Also I disable grouping of similar tasks. Then on Desktop 4, that I hardly use, I start a konqueror and minimize it. I now go to dt1 and logout saving my settings. The konq on dt4 is remembered. When I log in again it will load the konqueror on DT4 and I won't See it on DT123 (hence "invisible" :))
Another tip is to start Konqueror with a url. When I open konqueror I have replaced the standard "Button" with a URL loader that loads $HOME (Make a (Link to lokation (URL)) on the desktop. and type the URL $HOME ) This also speeds up things for me . Okok this only works if you have enough memory + don't use dt 4(or highest) intensively + are willing to set the taskbar setting like mine. I'm looking for a way to really load konqueror invisibly.

Well, that was a long story. Now I hope that it helps you...

hmmm, or did you compile with other setting? I used the default USE settings. Perhaps i can gain some speed there?

BTW, thanx for the tip on konq....

flags:
-march=athlon -pipe -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer
This shouldn't make a difference od more than 10 % appx though.

Sometimes I used -ffast-math, but that caused some programs to not work properly.

Is your harddisk set up correctly? (hdparm , search in archive)
Did you set your hostname in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts?

yes, I set up hdparm. But my disks are not performing superiour....something in the order of 130 Mb/s and 20 Mb/s

Sure...

Did U change anything regarding the default USE variables portage uses for compiling....i.e. objprelink or perhaps disable Gnome? I'm just curious to find out where the difference comes from.
I used the install method for KDE3.01 as posted in tips and tricks. Otherwise i made no changes to my fresh stage3 install....

USE="encode xface ssl php cups xv oss dvd quicktime -alsa -gnome"

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -m3dnow -mmmx -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -m3dnow -mmmx -fomit-frame-pointer"

I emerged only: kde-libs base utils admin network and multimedia.
I emerged the above after emerge system

I have a separate partition for portage and also PORTAGE_TMPDIR is on there. I thought that by doing this the files of the installed packages would be nicely sequentially placed without all the small file muck in between. (prevent fragmentation and have the binaries close together)

For the rest really nothing special....

Veel succes

:x can't seem to reduce loading time with konqi...still takes appx 4 secs to load. Did you do anything with prelinking or objprelinking? Anything else that might cause the difference ?

I've all done that, including low latency....system feels good, but loading times could be faster :(
