You have 2 options:
1) Disable the sandbox and install it.
2) Point out to the upstream devs that their package is broken and wait for them to fix it. |

Questions about features:
The extension dependencies on packages like thunderbird+enigmail.
Does paludis works around this correctly? Like reinstalling enigmail automatically?
This is one thing that bugs me on portage.
Are there any simple ways or tools to collect the ebuild messages and warnings in a comfortable manner? And probably have them mailed?
Is there something like --depclean on paludis?
The goal is having an automatic update system that resembles to this:
1 - "Display a list of packages that are going to be updated (something similar or better informative than the tree dependency of portage would be nice) and/or flags changes (either add or remove) .... Mail that to the admin - Do this every X days at 9am"
2 - "Start the updating process at 1am only after authorization by the admin and proper setup changes"
3 - "Collect all the warnings and messages and report if conf updates are needed .... If process failed, mail them right away, if not store them for later mailing"
4 - "Run revdep-rebuild like tool to check if nothing is broken ... again collect any warnings, messages or errors of anything that was (going to be) rebuilt and mail them together with the previous logs"
5 - "Once a week (or couple of weeks) run --depclean like command in test only mode to check for lost dependencies ... if no package is going to be removed, stop here, if not, mail this list"
6 - "If anything is to be depcleaned wait for authorization and remove them ... again mail any messages, warnings, errors..."
This is a rough schematic of what I'm looking for... Something like GUND, with less user interaction/more automated but still with proper admin control...
Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

No,that doesn't mean it.I'm only not sure enough to give a qualified answer.I think Paludis can do,but I'm not using enigmail. _________________ Notes on Dhamma

I've looked around, but may have missed something -- if so, just chalk it up as a potential FAQ.
The real FAQ mentions kde/qt downgrades being suggested by stricter dependency checking. Does this mean that every program linked against them has to be reinstalled every time the base library is, even slightly? If so, is a fix expected soon? If not, what am I doing wrong? |

Rebuilding kde/qt related stuff once fixes the first problem, the second one is called linking
Every time a base library is updated and not downward compatible the related packages have to be rebuild. That depends on the software packages and not on paludis.
My problem is that I got pissed 'cause nearly every major gnome package fails the test-phase. I reported once to the gnumeric maintainer and got an answer that was not satisfying... Now my bashrc expands.
Are the gnome herders gone lazy? |

They're now fixing those test failures.
It had been their decision to simply ignore the test failures, but the vast majority of them have been fixed. Of course, that isn't to say that every new package will pass the tests. |

afaik none of those packages are part of "system"
if you need them, add them in your world file |

even grub is not part of system? My box wouldn't boot had I not read all the packages carefully.. So the only way this is supposed to be done is by adding those packages manually to world? Did you do that too? |

Did you do that too? | Actually if you've emerged them (or installed with paludis) without --oneshot option (or --preserve-world in paludis), they should already be in your world file. Gentoo installation guide tells you to emerge grub so it should be there unless you have manually removed it afterwards.
You can add packages in world with emerge --noreplace package but I couldn't find equivalent option in paludis so I guess you just have to do it manually or reinstall the package. |

Of course grub isn't part of system. System is everything you need for a generic system. While to boot you need a boot loader, it doesn't have to be grub (you can use lilo instead).
Heck, kernel sources aren't part of system either even though you need a kernel to boot (you need a kernel but not their sources). |

| Can't seem to find a way to stop Paludis trying to install opal and ekiga (which don't build with gcc 4.20 and I have no use for anyway). In the old days I could do this with package.provided, what's the paludis way of telling it I don't want them? thanks |
