Hi all,

Until yesterday I was using beryl-9999 (from xeffects overlay) without problems. All was working perfectly. Yesterday I updated different packages (kernel-2.6.20-r6, freetype, libXsomething...). After the system update I made a revdep-rebuild and the system told me that all was ok. After that I rebuild completly the beryl stuff just in case. Now I can't use beryl any more :(. When I try to use beryl the system slows down and the application windows doesn't appear any more, and they are there because I use the window preview plugin (I think it is called miniature preview or something similar) an I can see the window with its contents but there is nothing on the desktop. As soon as I change to KWin all the windows appear on the desktop again. It is very strange and I don't know what to do.

Now I'm at work and I can't tell you more especific things about the problem but if you need to know something I will reply as soon as I arrive at home.

My beryl setup is based on nvidia drivers (I'm using the latests nvidia drivers and after the kernel update I've re-emerged them).

Any clue on how to solve this?

Btw, where are the xeffects forums? it seems the xeffects web has changed and now you can only access a new blog, but the forums are gone!

I'm having the same problem using beryl 0.2.1 with AIGLX on Radeon driver after updating the following packages:

sys-apps/man-1.6e-r3 [1.6e-r1]
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.20-r6 (but I haven't updated my kernel yet)
x11-libs/libXfixes-4.0.3 [4.0.1]
x11-proto/inputproto-1.4 [1.3.2]
x11-proto/randrproto-1.2.0 [1.1.2]
x11-libs/libXi-1.1.0 [1.0.1]
x11-libs/libXrandr-1.2.1 [1.1.1]
x11-libs/libXdamage-1.1.1 [1.0.3]
x11-libs/libXcomposite-0.3.1 [0.3]
media-gfx/imagemagick-6.3.3 [6.3.0.5-r1]
dev-libs/dbus-glib-0.73 [0.72]

I have problems too, after updating the following packages:

    media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.14_rc2
    sys-apps/man-1.6e-r3
    x11-libs/libXfixes-4.0.3
    x11-proto/inputproto-1.4
    x11-proto/randrproto-1.2.0
    x11-libs/libXi-1.1.0
    x11-libs/libXrandr-1.2.1
    x11-libs/libXcomposite-0.3.1
    x11-libs/libXdamage-1.1.1
    dev-libs/dbus-glib-0.73

After starting beryl the emerald theme occurs and afterwards the desktop freezes until beryl get killed from the console.

Config: beryl-0.2.1 with xf86-video-i810-1.6.5.

I can confirm that the workaround given in the bug report works for me.
Include the following in /etc/portage/package.mask
Code:

=x11-proto/randrproto-1.2.0
=x11-libs/libXrandr-1.2.1

Re-emerge those two packages and Beryl works again.

Same issue here with 9999 and .0.2.1 versions. I also tried re-emerging all the beryl/emerald/heliodir packages after update and revdep-rebuild.

I'll try it when I arrive at home.

But I think this is not a good solution because why should I mask a package that is marked as stable in the portage tree?

What do you think about?

I think it is better to try to re-emerge xorg-server as posted here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=174959#c7

Well, its a better solution than Beryl not working at all!

Also, you are masking (if you follow the instructions) just these particular versions of the two packages. Since you are using a masked package set (Beryl), you will from time to time find that various bits of packages break each other. I find it reasonably common to have to mask out package versions from time to time so that all my packages work. Usually, after some time, portage releases make newer versions available that work OK, and then the masks become redundant.

And, just to be pedantic - there is no such thing as "stable" in the portage tree! Just masked or not masked. Not masked does not imply stable.

Ian

I can verify that this does solve the problem. I am now trying rebuilding xorg-xserver from the bugs list.

Well,

The first thing I've tried is to recompile xorg-server (without masking any package). Now my beryl setup works again :D.

zarec99, did you re-emerge both packages after unmasking them?, and after that, did you recompile xorg-server?

It worked for me and I think this is better than masking packages.

Thank you all.

I'll change the subject to [SOLVED].

I can confirm that unmasking and re-emerging the upgraded packages, and then emerging xorg-server works for my installation. To be explicit, these three were emerged in this order
Code:

=x11-proto/randrproto-1.2.0
=x11-libs/libXrandr-1.2.1
=x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r5
I did a complete reboot to make sure there was nothing lyng around, and beryl works fine after a restart.

Yes, I did a reboot aswell after reemerging xorg-server, but I'm not sure if it is really necessary.

I recompiled xorg-server and rebooted, after that beryl worked fine. I didn't try just restarting xorg but I think that it would have been fine, as you said.
Code:
user hostname ~ $ emerge -pv xorg-server

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.3.0.0  USE="dri ipv6 nptl xorg (-3dfx) -debug -dmx -kdrive -minimal -sdl -xprint" 0 kB
