|
|
Ok-
I've got a Sparcstation 20 I picked up from work and want to install Gentoo on it. I've found tarballs for various stages (I want to try a stage1... probably will take awhile but still) but everything I find for stage1 or stage2 are tarballs... (ie: stage1-sparc-1.1a-r1.tgz) I have no clue how to burn that on my x86 PC (I'm runnin W2k, not Linux), the only ISO I found was from a stage3 tarball but I don't want to use that. Anyone provide some help? Thanks. |

I tried installing some ISO's I downloaded and this is the response I get back from the system:
With the gentoo-sparc-1.1a-r2.iso I get the following:
Quote: | Boot device: /iommu/sbus/espdma@f,400000/esp@f,800000/sd@6,0:d File and args:

::cut out majority of output:

...and the system seems to lock here. When booting the gentoo-sparc-1.4_rc4.iso image I get:
Quote: | Boot device: /iommu/sbus/espdma@f,400000/esp@f,800000/sd@6,0:d File and args:
SILO
-- Welcome to Gentoo SPARC Linux --

If you are using a serial console, please append serial to the end of your
boot option (e.g. "gentoo serial") for proper serial console support.
Please report any bugs you find to https://bugs.gentoo.org and assign them
to the Sparc team.
Thank you for using Gentoo Linux!

reserve_bootmem: base[14000000] size[18bbb4] |
...and it hangs here. However, it takes a good 2-3 minutes to reach this point and the CD-ROM access light blinks on and off (not rapidly). I can't find any other ISO's to try and burn... Like I said, I'm not sure how to burn a tar file directly to a CD (remember I'm on W2k) so that's not an option for the moment. Any help at all would be *greatly* appreciated. |

Heya ktulu1115
OK, as for the tar files, you don't really burn them like a CD image (ISO). Tar files are an archive (similar to zip) and are used to help build your system after you've booted from one of our ISO images.
As for your ISO problem I'm not entirely sure what's going on. Some things to check are
1) How much RAM do you have?
2) Do you know what processor is in the machine?
3) Do other sparc bootable CDs work? |

Ok... I tried the 1.4 rc4 on my friend's Sparc 20 and it works beautifully... He's got 256mb ram (instead of 96 on mine) and some other minor things are different.
As for my system this is what I have:
Quote: | ok module-info
MBus : 50 MHz
SBus : 25 MHz
CPU#0 : 60 MHz SuperSPARC / SuperCache
ok banner
SPARCstation 20 (1 X 390Z55), No Keyboard
ROM Rev. 2.19, 96 MB memory installed, Serial #7549938.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:73:33:f2, Host ID: 727333f2. |
No other ISO's I've tried work at all... Is there anything I am missing or overlooking? |

OK...
I got it working finally. I had either bad RAM or it wasn't inserted correctly, cause it works fine now. Ran into another problem though...
When following the sparc install instructions (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-install.xml) I can get all the way up to step 4, code listing 4.1. The problem is in the second line that says:
Quote: | chroot /mnt/root-\`uname -m\` bin/bash |
That path doesn't seem to exist for me... There is a "boot" directory on the CD-ROM but not a root one.... I'm not entirely sure what those instructions do so I really can't proceed further. Again, I'm using the 1.4_rc4 ISO here. |

You can omit that particular line in the code segment. The document was written for the old 1.1a ISO image. Newer documentation for the 1.4_rc4 ISOs should be out soon.. |
