Code:
$hdparm -d1 /dev/hda6
HDIO_SET DMA failed: invalid argument
using_dma = 0

Any clues? Thanks.

Try:
Code:
hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

I think it's just how you specified the device.

It seems as though the effect wasn't permanent as when I rebooted, I got the same message about the DMA setting from dmesg. Can I make it permanent? :)

Have a look at /etc/conf.d/hdparm :) Thats what you are looking for. Just enter the right options and add hdparm to your default runlevel with "rc-update add hdparm default" and it is started every boot.
