Hi there,

Is possible install gentoo on Sun Enterprise 3000 and do storage A1000 work? Or better, through gentoo, access A1000 storage ?

Thanks a lot

In a nut shell, yes. My file server box is x86 (dunno if the E3k is x86_32/64 or Sparc) with a PCI bus dual-chan scsi2/lvd controller using the Symbios Logic 53c875 chipset. (I think it's actually labeled as 53c876, probably just to denote that it's a dual-channel controller.) To each controller port I have connected a Sun D1000 (similar to your A1000), with each enclosure containing a mixture of hard disks from different manufacturers, but they're all scsi2/lvd 10k rpm. That's a grand total of 24 spindles on two scsi busses being driven by one PCI card. It works great!

Code:
 # lspci
...
00:13.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c875 (rev 14)
00:13.1 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c875 (rev 14)
00:14.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AHA-7850 (rev 03)
...

# lsscsi

Ah ah, careful when you speak, the A1000 and D1000 are similar but not the same.
D1000 is just JBOD (bunch of disks, no raid controller) whereas the A1000 has a raid controller....

You're correct. The D1000 is a JBOD, while the A1000 has some brains. But, I did say they were "similar", not the same.

If the A1000 acts like most hardware raid devices, then you do your config of the raid arrays on the storage device itself, then present the arrays as block devices to the HBA. In this case, the scsi controller would just see a single block device, say, sda for example, and the A1000 would do all the striping/mirroring/parity/whatever for storage on the spindles.

So, it should be just as easy as my D1000, with the difference being the RAID device setup is on the storage unit side and not the OS side... right?

IIRC the raid setup for the A1000 is on the host side and different configured raid devices show up as different LUNs.
So if the A1000 is already configured it should work, but you'll need to enable multiple LUN support in the scsi section of the kernel to "get it right".
