|
|
Hi all!
[my_life] Here's the story, my father wants a computer for simple office tasks like word processing, viewing and printing pictures and text and browsing the web, nothing else. I'm thinking about setting up my Ultra2 for him and buying a printer that prints over ethernet. [/my_life]
I know this may be quite funky but I'd like to know wether it seems possible to you. I haven't much experience of using my ultra2 as a desktop workstation as I mostly used it as a server or for testing different stuff. So here's what I'd like to know:
1- Is X stable on sparc64 and are there stable WM for it around?
2- Do you guys think it would be tricky to have a printer that would work with it and do you have some good experiences with ethernet printers?
3- Is CUPS stable on sparc64?
All your comments, suggestions and ideas are welcome and please feel free to tell me wether I'm just fucked up to have such an idea!
Regards,
Adrien

- X (xorg-x11 & friends) is stable on sparc64; in particular, it works fine on U2;
- I have two printers on my LAN (Xerox_DocuPrint_N2125, HP_LaserJet_4Si), U2 connects to them just fine,
- Using CUPS since early 2003.

Oh, and, for WM. I've been using fvwm2 on sparcs forever; others like fluxbox, and so on. I know both of those work quite well. Others use kde or gnome with good success. |

Thanks Ferris for your kindness. I'll give it a try as soon as I'll be back home
